US Open Tennis preview and odds: Juan Martin del Potro vs Stan Wawrinka

September 08, 2016 - USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, New York

US Open - Quarter-finals

Stan Wawrinka will be attempting to reach his third US Open semi-final in four years when he goes up against a rejuvenated Juan Marin del Potro in New York on Wednesday.

Stan looking to continue good run at US Open

World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka has yet to add a US Open title to his Grand Slam collection but he has reached the quarter-final stage twice in the last three years and will be hoping to go one better this year. The Swiss player took four sets to find a way past Ukrainian Illya Marchenko in the last round after losing a third set tiebreaker - although he did look relatively comfortable in the other three sets. Prior to that match, the third seed needed five sets to overcome the challenge of Britain’s Daniel Evans.

His opponent has come into this tournament with a new lease of life after picking up a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Rio. Del Potro lost to Andy Murray in the final of that event and will be looking to set-up a potential rematch with the Scot with a win on Wednesday. The current World No. 142 should be coming into this quarter-final fresh after his previous match was cut short due to Dominic Thiem`s withdrawal through injury. The Argentinean has yet to drop a set at this year`s US Open and has already brushed aside some quality players including World No. 11 David Ferrer.

Del Potro has the edge in head-to-head career meetings having won four of their six previous encounters including a recent four-set victory at Wimbledon. It has been eight years since Wawrinka last triumphed over the former World No. 4.

Betting odds and tips

Comeback king Del Potro is in good form and will be arriving at the court much fresher than his opponent. He should also have the New York crowd on his side. As a result, the bookies have him down as favourite and we have to agree.

You can back Del Potro to win at 8/13 with Bet365.
