Leicester City travel to Southampton`s St. Mary`s tomorrow (8th November) hoping to get their season back on track after slipping into the relegation zone for the first time. Ronald Koeman`s Saints will, however, be a tough proposition with the side only four points behind Chelsea who sit in first place in the Premier League.
Koeman`s men have picked up nine points from their last three Premier League games, the team following up a slight defeat at Tottenham with an 8-0 thrashing of relegation-threatened Sunderland.
Two own goals from defenders Santiago Vergini and Patrick van Aarnholt bookended five goals scored by Southampton players, Liam Bridcutt also turned the ball into his own net in the second half to make it 4-0. Saints` top scorer Graziano Pelle completed his brace in the 69th minute, whilst Jack Cork, Dusan Tadic and Victor Wanayama also got their names on the scoresheet. The result marked the biggest win in the St. Mary`s outfit`s history in the Premier League.
With momentum behind them, the Hampshire side did the double over Stoke City, Sadio Mane grabbing the only goal in their Premier League clash at home, before a Pelle brace and Shane Long`s first goal for his new club saw them progress through to the last eight of the League Cup with a 3-2 victory. With one of the biggest goal tallies in the Premier League already this season, Pelle is the 6/5 (Betbright, Betvictor, paddy Power) favourite to score at any time against the Foxes.
The Hoops only needed a goal from Victor Wanayama in the third minute to dispatch Hull in their last Premier League fixture, held away at KC Stadium. Whilst last weekend saw Southampton secure their fourth win on the trot (third in the Premier League), it brought less welcome news for tomorrow`s opponents who have now gone 270 minutes without hitting the back of the net. This profligacy has come as a result of a final minute equaliser that saw Burnley come from 2-0 down to cancel out first-half goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Riyad Mahrez. Since the heartbreaking concession, the East Midlands club have succumbed to a 71st minute Gabriel Obertan strike in their match against Newcastle, a Wilfried Bony brace away at Swansea and an Esteban Cambiasso own goal against West Bromwich Albion, all without reply. It is 11/10 (bet365, betfair, Spreadex, Stan James) on Southampton keeping a clean sheet and Leicester continuing to misfire. A Saints win to nil is currently available at 6/4 with boylesports.
Indeed, it is the home team who are the favourites for the clash outright. It`s at boylesports where punters can pick up odds of 40/85 on a fourth top-tier win in as many games for Koeman`s high-flyers. Nigel Pearson`s boys in blue will be looking to upset odds of 15/2 (betfair, Betvictor) by bagging all three points whilst a draw is available at 19/5 with betfair.
There`s good news for both sides as they remain without any new injuries to key faces. Saints striker Jay Rodriguez is yet to make an appearance this season after picking up the serious knee ligament injury back in April that saw the youngster miss out on the World Cup. James Ward-Prowse is still on the mend after an ankle problem saw him substituted during his side`s clash away at Swansea and won`t be available for selection.
Experienced defender Matthew Upson is still sidelined for the Foxes, the game coming just that little bit too soon for the 35-year-old former West Ham man who is still recovering from an ankle injury that has seen him sit out all of his team`s games. Fellow back-four stalwart Zoumana Bakayogo is also given more time after a long-term knee problem whilst second-choice shot-stopper Ben Hamer is also out.
