Phil Taylor is the number one seed and the 9/4 (BWIN/betway) favourite for the World Grand Prix Darts which gets underway in Dublin on Monday (7th).
Taylor won the inaugural event in 1998, the first of his ten in this, and is clearly the man they still need to beat in 2013.
The format suits Taylor a great player of the doubles as you need of them to start and finish. The draw has been quite kind for the Stoke player with Jamie Caven in his opener before a second rounder with either Robert Thornton or Paul Nicholson. The Power will hope it is the Australian rather than the Scot who beat him here in round two last year.
Those who think Taylor will slip up might want to take him on in the quarter betting where Gary Anderson is a 9/1 (TOTESPORT/betfred/sportingbet), Peter Wright is 10/1 (boylesports/sportingbet) as is Robert Thornton (GENERAL) while Wes Newton is an 11/1 (BETVICTOR) hope.
The second quarter is expected to be between Simon Whitlock and James Wade with the Australian the 15/8 (sportingbet) favourite though he has not made it past the second round in the last three outings in this event. Wade meanwhile has not played since his semi-final exit in the World Matchplay (due to a suspension) which means he could be rusty. It looks a section that is wide-open though it is hard to find a name that appeals to side with.
The third quarter is headed by defending champion and second seed Michael van Gerwen and he is a 4/1 (boylesports) shot. The Dutchman has not had as good a second half of the year and was eliminated in the semi-finals of the European Championship and the World Matchplay and the Sydney Masters has marked his only recent final appearance including Players events. Up first for Mighty Mike is a game with John Part before a potential second rounder with fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld. I think van Gerwen could be worth taking on and will do so with Dave Chisnall at 5/1 (sportingbet). Lethal Chizzle (as he is sadly not called) made the last eight of the World Matchplay and the final of a couple of recent Tour events recently. The form is in place and things could open up right for the talented player.
Adrian Lewis is the third seed and the 13/8 (BOYLESPORTS) favourite to win the fourth quarter. The problem for Jackpot is that Brendan Dolan and a passionate crowd await in the opener. It does not take much to mess with the head of Adrian Lewis and the vocal Irish fans might manage to do so. If you think Lewis will not win this quarter then look at Andy Hamilton 9/2 (GENERAL) or Justin Pipe 15/2 (TOTESPORT/betfred/SPORTINGBET) to come out on top instead.
It seems hard to see past Phil Taylor to win the tournament as he is in great form, is a proven winner here and has a reasonably kind draw so odds of 9/4 (BWIN/betway) are value. It looks wide open in the second section as to who his potential final opponent could be so try the each-way chances of Dave Chisnall at 28/1 (SPORTINGBET) who looks even better value at 5/1 (SPORTINGBET) to win the third quarter.
