Following the China Open in Beijing last week, the ATP tour moves swiftly on to Shanghai for the next stage of the far east circuit with the Shanghai Rolex Masters. An ATP Masters 1000 event, the Shanghai Masters has previously been voted tournament of the year for that category, which is voted for by the players and offers prize money of over $4,000,000. Featuring many of the top players, the event is very popular among locals and fans worldwide and provides some great betting opportunities in the process.

Having won the event on the last two occasions, defending champions Novak Djokovic is favourite to lift the title again this year, currently available at 4/6 at betfair. Djokovic has not lost a match in this event since way back in 2010 and will be confident of continuing that winning streak in to 2015. Also, the Serbian has just come off the back of a tournament victory in China last week, a performance that he described as the best of his career and is therefore in great shape to maintain his winning streak in Shanghai.

The man who last defeated Djokovic in Shanghai is Swiss legend Roger Federer and although many people are quick to write the former world number one off these days, Federer is entering the event fresh having not played an ATP tournament since the US Open Series. Federer is currently sitting at 6/1 to make a successful comeback from injury and claim the title and the draw looks kind, with Grigor Dimitrov, the biggest threat in section of the draw already knocked out.

Scotsman Andy Murray returns to a venue that he enjoys, having won the Shanghai Masters in 2010/11 and is entering the event in good form. Having reached the semi-finals of the China Open last week, Murray is hoping to pick up more valuable points in the lead up to the ATP finals event in London at the end of the season. The top 8 players are invited to participate in the event and Murray finds himself just outside in 9th place and will therefore have extra incentive to do well in Shanghai and this makes the 8/1 offered by BetVictor for Murray to win a tempting bet. However, Murray will have to get past the dominating Djokovic if he is to progress to the final.

Looking outside the usual suspects, the early exit of Spaniard Rafael Nadal and the elimination of fellow tournament hopeful Milos Raonic has really opened up the bottom section of draw, especially for 6th seed Tomas Berdych. The Czech is currently number seven in the world and will be looking at the draw and really fancying his chances of progressing all the way to the final. Berdych is currently available at 7/1 with betfair to win the event and Stan Wawrinka, the main threat in his quarter of the draw has already been dismissed from the tournament by Gilles Simon.

However, the way this event is shaping up, it`s becoming increasingly difficult to look beyond world number one Novak Djokovic. He is the clear favourite for a reason and the fact that his biggest threat is now going to be Andy Murray, who is 8/1 to win the event, only goes to further strengthen the Serb`s case.
