Twenty-one-year-old Russian Daria Gavrilova will be looking to see off Australian Arina Rodionova as she looks to qualify for the first round of the Indian Wells tournament. This match between the pair will take place on Tuesday 10th March and will be the third time that the two players have faced off on-court, their head-to-head record reading 1-1 at the time of writing.
Whilst this record suggests that very little is between Gavrilova and Rodionova, it is the former who has the advantage with her victory last year coming on a hard court surface like that they will face off on in California. The Moscow-born star beat Rodionova, who is four years her senior, in straight sets in the first round of the Lexington Challenger in Kentucky.
With her protected ranking, Gavrilova secured the opener by six games to four before needing a seventh game to see of her opponent of Russian heritage in the second. A number of bookmakers have a price of 4/9 on the 106 rank taking the win in straight sets once again.
The winner met Madison Brengle in the second stage of the competition, taking the second set 6-4 following a 6-4 defeat in the first. Gavrilova only managed to pick up two games in the third and see was duly knocked out by the player who would go on to seal her first tournament victory in the ITF competition.
The players only other previous meeting came on clay back in 2012, Rodionova able to claim a three sets victory over her rival in Kazan, Russia. The then 23-year-old took the first set by a tie-break before losing out in the second by six games to three. The third needed to be decided by a twelfth game, Rodionova running out the 7-5 winner in the last. She is 12/1 with sportingbet to secure a two sets to one victory again tomorrow.
Indeed, it is Gavrilova who is the favourite to progress through to the next stage of qualification for the so-called Paribas Open. The player, who is 136 places better off in the world rankings, can be backed at the best price of 1/6 at Coral for a victory by any means possible. Whilst she is an outsider for the match, her rival sure isn`t without a shout and is available at the best price of 5/1 at 32red, 888sport, sportingbet and unibet.
The favourite is still just that even if you choose to back her with a -1.5 set handicap. The 5`5" player is available at 4/9 to beat her opponent starting with such a disadvantage. Meanwhile, both betway and Sportingbet are offering odds of 17/10 on Rodionova winning when starting with a 1.5 set advantage. Gavrilova has run out the second set winner in both their previous meetings together and is a 1/4 (betfair) chance to pick up the second set on the third consecutive occasion. Otherwise, both boylesports and Sportingbet have her opponent at odds of 3/1 to beat her in this second set.
Russia`s representative has already picked up two ITF trophies this season and will be looking to transfer this good form to the WTA stage. Gavrilova was the winner in the Burnie tournament in Australia, failing to drop a set in any of her encounters. She also got the better of her competition in Launceston, also down under, to secure back-to-back title victories.
The Russian-born Australian, on the other hand, has failed to make any impression on any of the competitions she has entered this year. Rodionova lost to Irina Falconi in both of the tournaments that were won by Gavrilova.
