League 1

The game of the day in League One is the one at Griffin Park where Brentford take on Sheff U. Bookmakers make Brentford the 5/4 (GENERAL) favourites for the game as no side won more home games in this division than the Bees last season. Brentford were held 1-1 by Port Vale on the opening day before a 3-2 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge in the League Cup.

The Blades won the opening league game of the season seeing off Notts County 2-1 though were struggling before County had someone sent off. This was followed by a 2-1 from Burton in midweel. Throw in the fact that key midfielder Kevin McDonald is set to leave for Wolves and the signs are that odds of better than evens on a home victory look very decent.

If Brentford are the best bet in the league this week then the worst bet must be in taking Swindon to see off Stevenage at odds of 10/11 (BETVICTOR/paddy Power/william hill). The Robins have put in good performances in the last two games playing some nice poession football with some eye-catching performances most notably from a couple of Tottenham loanees. The problem is that they do not look like scoring goals and do not possess much fire power about them. I would not put anyone off laying the home side whlle the draw at 13/5 (GENERAL) and a Stevenage victory at 19/5 (sportingbet) do look a little bit of value. True Stevenage lost four against Oldham in the first weekend but you can be sure Graham Westley has had words and that was shown in the clean sheet against Ipswich in the 2-0 victory in the League Cup.

Another bet in this game is in opposing the home side to get among the goals I can not see Swindon scoring more than two goals so take under 1.5 home goals at 5/6 (boylesports).

Oldham and Walsall are two sides who both look like they have goals in them this season so I am shocked to see the over 2.5 goals available at 23/20 (CORAL) while YES in the both teams to score market is also an option to consider at 11/12 (888 SPORT/unibet). The Latics were involved in a seven goal thriller with Stevenage on the opening day while Walsall grabbed three of the four goals in their game with Tranmere.

In terms of goalscorers there is plenty of value in the anytime scorer market in this game where Jose Baxter is a massive 2/1 (paddy Power) to add his opening day brace while on loan Walsall frontman Milan Lalkovic looked a touch of class on the opening day and must be considered value at 9/4 (paddy Power) in the anytime scorer market.

Finally I am going to take a chance on Carlisle to get something from their visit to Bradford. After an opening day disaster at home to Leyton Orient where they went down 5-1 the Cumbrians bounced back by beating Blackburn in the League Cup and confidence will be high. The Bantams showed some encouraging signs in their opener with Bristol City especially in the front duo of Nahki Wells and James Hanson that being said though they are much too short at 5/6 (BETVICTOR/william hill). Take Carlisle to get something out of the game in the double chance market at 21/20 (bet365/sportingbet/BWIN).

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Brentford to beat Sheffield United, 5/4 (GENERAL)
SILVER: Carlisle/Draw double chance v Bradford, 21/20 (bet365/sportingbet/BWIN)
BRONZE: Milan Lalkovic to score anytime v Oldham, 9/4 (paddy power)
