After what can only be described as a shocking world cup in Brazil, England got off to the perfect start in their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign with a good 2-0 win away to Switzerland. In what was probably going to be England`s toughest group match of this qualifying period, under pressure manager Roy Hodgson could not have asked for a better performance or result from his team. England now face the minnows of San Marino in their next Group E match at Wembley in a game that they should win with plenty to spare with betfred offering odds of 1/100 for a home victory.
The length of those odds tells you everything you need to know about San Marino and the lack of threat they pose to England in this match. Having lost every competitive game since 2001, the team, consisting of shop workers, students and lawyers are surely not going to leave Wembley with anything but a defeat and odds of 100/1 at bet365 for them to win the game show just how unlikely this outcome really is.
At 40/1 with BetVictor, even a draw is a long shot and on the last two occasions these two teams met, San Marino didn`t come to close to taking a point, with the games ending in 8-0 and 5-0 wins for England.
This means there is very little value in getting on England in this one as they are such overwhelming favourites and therefore we need to look away from the half-time and full time markets to get something out of this game.
The last time San Marino met a team close to the quality of England was in 2013 when they lost a world cup qualifying match home to Ukraine by eight goals to nil, a result which gives some real perspective on what to expect in this match. The correct score market could provide some value here, with San Marino very unlikely to register a serious attempt on target in this game, expect England to win the match to nil. BetVictor are offering 10-1 for England to win the match 8-0 but if you fancy double figures, a 10-0 scoreline can be backed at 18/1 with bet365. The last time San Marino scored against England was when they famously opened the scoring in a 1993 world cup qualifier and the odds of both teams scoring again in this one is 5/1 with SkyBet.
With Daniel Sturridge missing again through injury, the chance is again there for Danny Welbeck to shine and build on his confident display against Switzerland last time out. The Arsenal striker is 6/1 to go one better than he did against Switzerland and get a hat-trick against San Marino with paddypower. Fellow front-man, Wayne Rooney is closing in on Jimmy Greaves` England goals total and requires three more to draw level with the former striker, he can be backed to get the three he needs at 5/1, also with paddypower.
Surprise call up Jonjo Shelvey claimed his only England cap to date in a match against San Marino in 2012, coming off the bench in a 5-0 win. There is a good chance that Shelvey will feature in this game from the start and if so, the Swansea midfielder will not have a better opportunity go get his first goal for England and is 12/1 with BetVictor to get the first goal of the game and 2/1 with SkyBet to score at any time.
