The Premier League Darts gets underway Thursday night as ten of the best players in the world take part and here is our guide to the best of the bets from the outright markets.
The 2014 PDC ladbrokes World Darts Championship and defending Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen is the 15/8 (boylesports/sportingbet) favourite for the trophy this year. The Dutchman is a deserved market leader as he is a player in huge form and stamina should be no problems for him at his age. I think van Gerwen looks certain to make the last four though I think his regular season standard might drop a little. He will be a marked man among the players while for himself the hunger might not be there so much to motivate himself week in week out in this long tournament.
It is Taylor then who gets the recommendation at 11/5 (betway). The Power will be hungry to prove a point after his shock exit in the World Championships to Michael Smith. Taylor excels at this event having won it six times and should have no problem finding the desire to reclaim a title that he lost last season. Adrian Lewis is the 11/2 (betway) third favourite and he is a player who I would like to have onside. It is true that the Premier League format does not suit Jackpot who can be in and out of his game. Yet Lewis should have enough to make the top four and he is one of the three who can raise their game to the highest of levels. I will recommend leaving the price on Jackpot though as a few early losses might see the price rise so look to invest then.
The race then is on outside of these three for the fourth semi-final place and ultra-consistent Simon Whitlock who is 2/1 (GENERAL) to claim it. The Australian is a former finalist in this event and is one of four players I think will be battling out for the final slot.
The second of whom is newcomer Peter Wright 2/1 (GENERAL) and the World Championship runner-up will not be fazed by the crowds for sure. I would though be wary of him backing at this price as we have yet to seen how Snakebite deals with the demands of travelling and playing each and every week. It might be worth siding with Wright at bigger prices to win individual matches rather than predicting him to make the top four first time out.
The third player is the Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld and Barney is 9/4 (boylesports) to make the semi-finals. No doubt the Dutchman is among the top four players in the game on his day though too often the shoulders will slump, confidence will drop and Barney will look like he wants to be anywhere other than on stage playing the game.
The bet then is the 11/4 (sportingbet) are going on Gary Anderson to make the top four. The Scotsman is starting to show signs of life in his game after a disappointing few years and he will have a point to prove after finishing bottom last time out. Anderson was victorious in a Euro Tour event in Germany at the weekend suggest the form is there and he pushed van Gerwen to the limit in the Worlds before going out in a seven set thriller.
The three remaining players Robert Thornton, Dave Chisnall and Wes Newton are the three in the mix for relegation to me and I like the 5/2 (BOYLESPORTS) on Chisnall to finish in the bottom two. Chizzy has had a poor six months and this might continue in the Premier League. Chisnall went out to John Henderson in the opening round of the World Championship and exited early in the recent Euro Tour event in Germany. He is one whose head can drop and he might let the crowd get to him if they sense a sign of weakness.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Phil Taylor to win Premier League, 11/5 (BETWAY)
SILVER: Dave Chisnall to finish in the bottom two, 5/2 (BOYLESPORTS)
BRONZE: Gary Anderson to make the final four, 11/4 (sportingbet)
