It`s tight at the top of the betting for this season`s Champion Bumper with Moon Racer replacing Bordini at the head of the stakes at a couple of bookmakers (Betbright, betway, Spreadex). The former is available at the best price of 7/1 across the board whilst betway are offering 15/2 on former favourite Bordini coming up trumps in the Festival`s premiere flat race.
Indeed, Moon Racer would be our pick for the 2m Grade One, having already recorded an emphatic 12 length win in Gloucestershire on only his second run out. The mount of David Pipe was transferred from the stable of Michael Ronayne after a surprising debut victory that saw him run out the seven length winner of a 16f Fairyhouse flat race when the 50/1 outsider. Having carried a much heavier burden on both of these occasions than the one he will be getting to grips with this afternoon, it looks as though the world is this Caroline Tisdale and Bryan Dre owned horse`s oyster.
Patrick Mullins will ride Bordini for his father, Willie, and whilst the horse is unbeaten in two, these victories came in small fields and this will be his first appearance in mainland Britain. The Rich Ricci charge justified favouritism on both occasions and has shown that he is a versatile horse who can get to grips with a number of different finishes. He hacked up the six length winner in a two-miler at Navan before putting in a less pretty performance to see off Falcon Crest at the same distance at Punchestown. The conditions should be perfect for this Martaline-sired animal and should be there or thereabouts should he be able to adapt of the hurly-burly of a large field.
Vigil is the only horse standing from last year`s renewal, looking to beat his previous fifth place finish in the race. The horse will undoubtedly benefit from that performance and recovered well enough to take a Leopardstown 2m flat race on his account opener. Whilst this win when the odds-on favourite was hardly convincing, he was carrying 3lbs more than his rivals when putting a length between himself and Bellshill (16/1 - Coral, Stan James). Dermot Weld`s charge`s burden of weight will be smaller here and he will be all the better for it though comes up against another stumbling block in that the ground may not be soft enough, both his wins having come of soft. There`s question marks here but he`s a 9/1 shot with a number of bookmakers.
Both Wait For Me and Supasundae are the next horses in the betting, both available at 12/1. Whilst this price is commonplace for the latter, potential fans of the former will have to search out this price at either Betvictor, boylesports or sportingbet.
Wait For Me has only had one run out and it may just be that the horse is too unexposed for success in this Grade One. This Ascot 2m outing for Philip Hobbs` charge ended in victory though he beat second placed Always Lion by five lengths when 4lbs lighter - hardly convincing. Out of Quito De La Roque`s sire Saint Des Saints, this Andrew Cohen mount could be anything though will be helped by being ridden by Richard Johnson.
Henry De Bromhead saddles Supasundae, a Wetherby 2m win preceding another at the same distance at Ascot. The five-year-old looks forward to the Bumper seeking a hat-trick. The Galileo-sired charge sure does have the class, his win at Ascot was a listed race overturning the long time favourite Yanworth when on terms. His victories also came on good and soft surfaces and should face no danger whatever is under hoof.
Twenty-four run.
