It is a busy day of live Football on Sunday with the Community Shield, a game from the Championship, one from the Conference, one from the SPL and a host of European matches. Here is our guide to the best of the bets from these matches.
The ITV cameras will be at Wembley on Sunday afternoon as Man United take on Wigan in the Community Shield (2pm).
Wigan are the first team since West Ham in 1980 to be playing in this game who will not be playing in the Premier League. Bookmakers have been quick to dismiss their chances having them down as 11/1 (boylesports/STAN JAMES/ladbrokes) outsiders for the game. Owen Coyle though will remind his side that nobody fancied them to beat City last season and they subsequently did. In addition Wigan are already a few weeks ahead of the Red Devils in terms of fitness and already have a competitive game under their belt in the league. I think some value can be had in backing the Latics on the Asian Handicap where they are given a 1.5 start with ladbrokes at odds of 1012/1000. This bet will pay out if Wigan win, draw or lose by just one goal and only be a loss if United win by two or more goals. Those looking for a scorer bet will be attracted to Robin van Persie who has grabbed six goals in his last five games against the Lancashire side. The Dutchman is just 8/11 (boylesports/CORAL/william hill) to score anytime. At a bigger price I like the look of Grant Holt to score at anytime which is a generous 4/1 (betfred). The Wigan striker netted last weekend and will be a handful for a United defence not yet match sharp.
Also live on Sunday is the Championship game between Leeds and Leicester (4.30pm,Sky) from the King Power stadium. The home side are as short as 4/5 (GENERAL) victory as they look to continue a home record in the league last season that saw them have the best goal differential (+23) of any side in the Championship.
Leeds though can take heart from the head-to-head record at the ground where they have lost just one of their last six. The Yorkshire side have won both games this season 2-1 and a Leeds victory on Sunday is a generous looking 17/4 (BOYLESPORTS). The draw has been in four of the last six meetings between the sides at Leicester and is available once more at at 3/1 (bet365).
The recommended bet in this game is to back Leeds to continue their strong start on the Asian Handicap where with a 0.5 start they can be backed at 24/19 (188 BET).
Also live on Sunday is the Edinburgh derby from Tynecastle stadium (12:05,Sky). Hearts are the 7/5 (GENERAL) favourites for the game as they look to continue their dominance in recent games between the two sides having lost just one of the last 14 meetings in the SPL. Both sides lost their opening game of the season and with local pride so important and three of the last four meetings between the pair ending drawn the draw could be the value bet at 12/5 (bet365/SKYBET/sportingbet) while a Hibernian victory is a best priced 9/4 (SPREADEX).
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Wigan+ +1.5 on Asian Handicap v Man Utd,
SILVER: Leeds +0.5 on Asian Handicap v Leicester, 24/19 (188 BET)
