You have to go back to the US Open in 2009 when Juan Martin Del Potro lifted the trophy for a time that someone other than the big four (Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Murray) won one of the Grand Slams. It makes no sense to look beyond them when looking at the winners of the next few major events and by getting on early you can steal some value.
Rafa Nadal is a 5/6 (paddy Power) chance to win the French Open in 2014 after his victory on Sunday made it eight wins from the last nine years at Roland Garros. The Spaniard needs just one more crown to beat Max Decugis to the honour of being the most successful French Open player ever. 5/6 might prove a storming price next year though with the history of injuries behind him a year is a long time to trust in the knees of Rafa Nadal.
Wimbledon though is just two weeks away today (Monday 10th July) and it makes sense to side with Nadal for this event. YOU WIN are currently best priced on the top six in the betting (though they do not offer EW) with Djokovic the 21/10 favourite ahead of Nadal at 18/5, Murray at 17/4 and Federer at 25/4. Nadal might be a clay court king but his record at Wimbledon impresses also where he has reached the final on five of his last six appearances. Don’t stop with that though as Nadal is a 5/1 (william hill) EW chance in the US Open where he has reached the final the last two times he has played this event.
Andy Murray also looks great value to win Wimbledon at these prices, Murray made the final last year before coming unstuck to Federer in four sets though since then he has won the Olympics and the US Open. The Scot will be well rested after missing the French Open to heal an injured back.
Serena Williams is in dominant form winning three of the last four Grand Slams and as a five time Wimbledon champion must be considered value at 7/5 (betway) especially when you consider boylesports are as short as 4/5 on a Williams victory. The 7/5 will not last so take it while you still can. Other players expected to be in the mix are Victoria Azarenka at 7/2 (GENERAL) and Maria Sharapova at 13/2 (youwin).
The warm-up events are underway with Queens and Halle the places to be for the men. Andy Murray is expected to be popular to win at Queens though I will not be rushing to back him as he has been off the court for a number of weeks. The best strategy in that tournament is to find someone in the other half of the draw at bigger EW prices. Marin CIlic is at double figures and won this event in 2012 and the winner of his match with Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals should go on to the final.
The other event in Halle will be expected to dominated by top seed Roger Federer though the Swiss star was so off his game in the French Open I would not be rushing to back him. Instead look at the German duo of Tommy Haas and Phillip Kohlschreiber. Haas has won this event the last two years while Kohlschreiber won in 2010 and looked good in the French where he pushed Djokovic to four sets in the last 16.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Rafa Nadal to win Wimbledon, 18/5 (YOU WIN) and EW US Open 5/1 (william hill)
SILVER: Serena Williams to win Wimbledon, 7/5 (betway)
BRONZE: Andy Murray to win Wimbledon, 17/4 (YOU WIN)
