Cliff Kresge, Ryan Yip and Roger Tambellini are not made up names but real golfers and they have the honour of starting the US Open on Thursday. Here is our guide to the best of the bets from the opening round three balls and a range of specials.

Some real cracking three balls are scheduled with Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Rory McIlroy in action together at 18:14. Woods is the 6/4 (boylesports/BETVICTOR) favourite though Adam Scott is a strong starter and could be value at 9/4 (GENERAL).

The pick of the bets in this market could be in Robert Garrigus at 5/2 (GENERAL) to win the 13:02 three ball against Henrik Stenson and Ryan Moore. Moore has missed the cut in two of his last three tournaments and is a slow starter. Stenson is the danger but at 5/2 Garrigus looks value as he is a master of Golf in the rain.

A friend of mine who knows Golf well always adopts a betting strategy of waiting until after the first two rounds of action before placing his bets. To keep his interest he will also have a couple of small bets on players to be leading after the first and second round. Those adopting that strategy will see that Tiger Woods is 12/1 (SKYBET) to be leader after the opening round, Phil Mickelson is a 28/1 (GENERAL) chance while a host of players are available at 33/1 (GENERAL).

The bet here is Scott Stallings who has three top five finishes from his last three tournaments. The 28-year-old is a fast starter being one off the lead in the St Jude Classic last time out and shooting under 70 in each of his last three first rounds. Stallings can be backed at 80/1 with STAN JAMES who are unlike other bookmaker are paying out on the top six in this market and not the top five. He can also be backed at 75/1 (paddy Power) to be the leader after two rounds which pays out a ¼ the odds on the top five.

Bill Haas is another player who merits interest in the special markets as his ultra-consistent game could see him reward loyal followers while not really threatening to win the tournament itself. The Charlotte native is one of the most reliable players on the PGA Tour with six top ten finishes (the most recent of which was a tied fourth at the Memorial Tournament). It surprises me then to see him as big as 6/1 (GENERAL) to finish in the top ten and 11/4 (SKYBET) to finish in the top twenty.

You can bet on the top everything from Top Asian through to Top Swede via TopCat (or maybe that was a TV show). The best bet of these markets is in one that might pass you by, the Top Korean. KJ Choi who has to be considered a steal at 6/4 (SKYBET/BETVICTOR) to win this. Choi showed signs of life when coming tied 21st at the Memorial Tournament last time out and his major experience should see him home here. Choi also looks value at 3/1 (SKYBET/paddy Power) to be the top Asian.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: KJ Choi to be top Korean, 6/4 (SYBET/BETVICTOR), KJ Choi to be top Asian 3/1 (SKYBET/paddy Power)
SILVER: Bill Haas to finish in the top twenty, 11/4 (SKYBET), Haas to finish in the top ten, 6/1 (GENERAL)
BRONZE: Scott Stalling to lead, after the first round EW 80/1 (STAN JAMES), after the second round EW 75/1 (paddy Power)
