Champions League Preview and Odds - Manchester City vs Borussia Monchengladbach

September 13, 2016 20:45pm - Etihad Stadium

Champions League - Group Stage

Pep Guardiola will go in search of his third Champions League title as a coach when he leads Manchester City out in the group stages of the competition for the very first time on Tuesday night. Visitors, Borussia Monchengladbach are playing in the main section of Europe`s elite competition for the second successive season.

Pep looking for strong start before showdown with former club

It was perhaps written in the stars that Pep Guardiola would be drawn in a Champions League group with former club Barcelona. The Spanish coach also had to face his old team during his reign as Bayern Munich boss and on that occasion fell to a 6-2 aggregate score-line. But before he gets a another chance to take on his former employers, there is the small matter of games against Borussia Monchengladbach and Celtic to deal with.

The Sky Blues will be full of confidence after edging past city rivals Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime. That win marked City`s sixth competitive win in a row under their new boss.

The German side last reached the final of this competition back in 1977 and also won the UEFA Cup twice during the 1970s. They are now appearing in the Champions League for the second season in a row after progressing via the play-offs. The five-time former Bundesliga champions have slowly been working their way back to the upper reaches of their domestic league since regaining their top-flight status in 2008.

They come into this game on the back of a 3-1 defeat away to Freiburg in the Bundesliga. Prior to that, they enjoyed a 2-1 cup win over Hannpover 96 and a 2-1 league triumph at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

Team news

City are still without Vincent Kompany, while İlkay Gündoğan has returned to training but is unlikely to feature.
