Remi Garde still sits at the top of the betting to be named the new Newcastle United manager though reports coming from the club suggest that a decision is a long way away from being reached. The Magpies are looking for a new man at the helm after Alan Pardew was released from his position to enable him to take up the vacant role at Crystal Palace.
The evens favourite at Betvictor, fans of the English game will know Garde from his three year stint at Arsenal as a player. During his time with the Gunners, the midfielder picked up the Premier League and FA Cup double in the 1997-98 season before grabbing the Community Shield at the start of the following campaign.
He won six caps for France and was a member of his country`s squad for the European Championships of 1992 in Sweden.
All of the pint-sized Frenchman`s coaching experience was garnered back at Lyon, the club where he had begun his career in 1987. Garde worked as a coach as the club earned successive Ligue 1 titles in 2003-04 and 2004-05 before becoming the assistant manager to former Liverpool man Gerard Houllier as Paul Le Guen departed after three successful seasons in charge.
Garde finally got his chance to take the hot-seat in 2011 and stayed there for three seasons. Under the 48-year-old`s premiership, the club recorded 4th, 3rd and 5th place finishes as well as picking up the French Cup and Champions Trophy.
Whilst he is the strong market leader, it looks as though Garde faces stiff competition from one half of the Magpies` current caretaker manager duo, John Carver who is an 8/1 shot with Coral to earn himself the position full time. He is as short as 3/1 with other bookmakers, however.
This is passionate Geordie Carver`s second spell at the club, after having been the assistant of Bobby Robson from 1999 to 2004. He joined up with United again in 2011 when he took on the job of assisting Pardew following on from similar roles at Luton Town, Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield United.
The only full time management experience Carver can boast of, however, is the one year he had in charge of Major League Soccer side Toronto FC back in 2008. The 49-year-old former Gateshead man resigned after failing to make an impact on the squad who later missed out on an Eastern Conference play-off place.
Second favourite Carver did his hopes no harm at all, however, after his team put up a spirited performance against league leaders Chelsea in his first game in charge since Pardew`s leaving. Though his side lost 2-0, the steward was praised for his inclusion of Remy Cabella who added some much needed flair to the team.
Similarly inexperienced is Tim Sherwood though his is another name at the top end of the betting for the much sought after role. betfair offer the best price at 10/1 though a number of other bookies have priced up the former Watford man as a 4/1 chance.
The no-nonsense midfielder began his 18 year playing career at the Hornets before moving on to the likes of Norwich, Blackburn Rovers and, most famously, Tottenham Hotspur.
Sherwood would make his way back to Spurs in a coaching capacity after short playing stints at Portsmouth and Coventry. He was named as the club`s manager last season following the dismissal of Andre Villas-Boas. The 45-year-old lasted only a year in charge.
Elsewhere, former England manager Steve McLaren is a 14/1 (bet365, betfair, Coral) shot thanks to his performance as Derby County manager, German journeyman Bruno Labbadia is a new name to have surfaced and is 16/1 (betfair) to take the job from left field and at 25/1 (Numerous) Real Madrid coach Paul Clement may just be the best of the rest.
