The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most iconic events in all of sport, and if recent Formula 1 seasons haven’t really got the pulse racing due to their one-sided nature, the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in the present campaign is already drawing comparisons between the legendary face-off between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

Unlike the legendary rivalry of Senna and Prost, the relationship between Rosberg and Hamilton is quite clearly a relatively warm one. There are obviously going to be disagreements between them in such an obviously competitive and tense sport, but the two go way back, having first competed against each other in karting as teenagers.

When Hamilton initially moved to Mercedes, many people were surprised that he was ending his relationship with McClaren, which had previously been a major part of his F1 career. Certainly at the time, there was little evidence that Mercedes was ready to compete with one of the established giants of F1. But the team has very rapidly got a top-class car together, and with the Red Bulls floundering this year, Mercedes have absolutely dominated every Grand Prix thus far.

At this point in time, it’s hard to see anyone rivalling the two Mercedes. Hamilton has expressed this week that even he is surprised by how strong the car has been this season, and it has been good enough for Mercedes to win every single race so far this season, with Hamilton victorious in the last four. It was only a retirement on the behalf of Hamilton in the first race of the season in Australia which has prevented Mercedes from finishing 1-2 in every race so far, with the two dominant drivers of the season some 50 seconds ahead of the field in the recent Spanish Grand Prix.

It has long been asserted that Hamilton is the fastest driver in F1, and he has really lived up to that billing this season. Although Rosberg has performed admirably, the Briton has showed his class time and time again, and must be the favourite for to finish the season with the Drivers’ title. Rosberg is perhaps seen as the more Prost-like of the two, and it will be interesting to see how he fares against Hamilton as the season develops.

Given the dominance of the Mercedes duo and the evident superiority of their car, it’s extremely difficult to see any other driver being in with a chance at Monaco. Although Monaco may negate the quality of the Mercedes car to some extent, it is also known as a circuit which rewards the best driver, so this would obviously play into the hands of Hamilton.

In terms of betting for this race then, Hamilton is known as a pole position king, so it is particularly worthwhile to back the British driver to take pole, and I also think Hamilton will ultimately win the Monaco GP for his fifth consecutive race win.

Tips: Lewis Hamilton to take pole and win the Monaco GP (8/13 with paddy Power)
