Tiger Woods is the 7/1 favourite (General) for the US Open golf which gets underway Thursday (June 15) at the Olympic Club, San Francisco, California.
The American will certainly be celebrating if he bags his first major title since 2008 (which itself came at the US Open in California.) While not having hit the heights of previous years, Tiger seems to have found some better form in 2012 having landed two titles so far and Woods has no rival on the California circuit and the bookmakers seem to think he is the man to beat here.
The Europeans represent the biggest rival to Tiger with just two of the last eight US Opens going to the Americans and Lee Westwood is the man on form. Westwood arrived here on the back of a five-shot win at the Nordea Masters in Stockholm. Westwood is a 12/1 shot (General) to land that elusive first major title and has a third (tied) to his name at the US Open last year. Fellow Englishman Luke Donald is next in the betting. Donald, the current world number one, is also seeking his first major victory, but has been collecting the victories on the tour this year including a title at the BMW PGA championships at Wentworth. Donald is best priced 13/1 (boylesports.)
Defending Champion Rory McIlroy is next in the betting with The Northern Irishman 16/1 (General) to repeat the feats of 2011 and be the first golfer since Curtis Strange (88/89) to defend the US Open successfully. McIlroy had a share of the lead in the recent St Jude Classic in Memphis before he hooked his final tee shot into a lake.
Lefty (Phil Mickelson) is a 22/1 shot (paddy Power/Bodog/Coral) and commands respect when it comes to the majors, The five time US Open runner-up will likely be much shorter come round 2 if he starts well.
The new breed of American golfers follow Mickelson in the betting market. Justin Duffner is 28/1 (general) and arrives here on the back of a successful 2012 in which he has recorded his first two tour victories. Dustin Johnson is 30/1 (Hills) and arrives in good form after the weekend victory in the St Jude Classic in Memphis. Matt Kuchar has course form having finished tenth the last time the US Open was played at this course way back in 1998 (an event won by Lee Janzen). Kuchar is a much better player now and won the Players Championship in May and is priced at 30/1 (betfred/Hills),
Others of note are Adam Scott 45/1 (General), US Masters champion Bubba Watson 50/1 (general) and Louis Oosthuizen 60/1 (Stan James and Coral). While those looking for an outsider might want to consider the 66/1 (ladbrokes/Coral/Hills) on 2011 runner-up Jason Day, or the 150/1 (General) on Masters runner-up Y E Yang.
Bookmakers will be keen for your business so look out for special offers with enhanced each way terms (BET VICTOR are paying the top SEVEN places), money back special offers and enhanced price terms. In addition over 50 special markets are available including Top European, Top Amateur or Winning Margin.
The US Open takes place 14th-17th June at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California.
