With the Who`s Who of golf competing for major championship glory at the US Open, the Saint-Omer Open has pulled the Who`s That of the sport but do not let that fool you into thinking there is not a good bet on offer in the event.
Jose-Filipe Lima may be a household name in his household only but the France-raised, Portugal-representing golfer has excellent Saint-Omer Open claims and should be shorter in tournament betting lists given his sound credentials.
Lima loves the Aa Saint-Omer Golf Club in northern France, winning there in 2004 with a five-under-score of 279. The 30-year-old did not return to the unpretentious scene of his maiden European Tour triumph until 2009 but, when he did, he went close to taking home the trophy, finishing at least four shots clear of everyone except Christian Nilsson.
In 2010, Lima made the Saint-Omer Open top 20 before missing the 2011 cut during his injury-hit season. Now back in fine fettle and form - he was third in the Telenet Trophy at the end of last month - Lima rates a bet on his favourite track.
Magnus Carlsson is likely to head Saint-Omer Open betting markets at the time that the first golfers tee it up, with bookmakers liking his recent run of results that have seen him occupy top spot on the Challenge Tour Ranking chart.
But Carlsson`s missed the 2011 Saint-Omer Open cut without having an excuse up his sleeve and he finished tied for 67th in the 2010 renewal. Favourites should possess better course form than that, which brings Pelle Edberg into calculations.
Runner-up to 2010 Saint-Omer Open champion Martin Wiegele, Edberg occupied the top 10 at the end of last week`s Nordea Masters and makes more appeal than Carlsson at the odds.
With few proven winners in the field because of the glamour event taking place on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, bookmakers view the Saint-Omer Open as a raffle. But there is data that punters can use to whittle down the field and, given the tournament`s honour roll, it makes considerable sense to have a small punt or two on some live outsiders.
Daniel Denison, Espen Kofstad and Steven Tiley are three golfers in reasonable nick who have demonstrated that they can navigate the Aa Saint-Omer Golf Club layout, which is not particularly long but tends to attract strong winds.
Denison was one of three runners-up to Matthew Zions last year and he made the top 10 back in 2007. Kofstad was tied for 12th last year, just two shots adrift of Denison, after getting off to a shocking start. And Tiley has placed joint 17th and joint 29th in his two Saint-Omer Open appearances.
Sure, Denison, Kofstad and Tiley are not world beaters - that is why they are in France this week instead of the United States of America - but the Saint-Omer Open may not take much winning and they have reasonable credentials, particularly when you factor in their odds of return.
If you are thinking of having a bet on the Saint-Omer Open, note that it is usually played in blustery conditions so golfers who can handle wind and rain are the ones to consider. For example, high placings in tournaments contested on links courses is worth investigating.
The Saint-Omer Open begins on the morning of Thursday 14 June 2012 and ends on the afternoon of Sunday 17 June 2012.
