New Orleans coach Sean Payton is unlikely to win coach of the year this season, partly because of the job Andy Reid has done in Kansas though mainly because of the ’bounty’ scandal that saw him suspended all last season. The Saints coach has done a remarkable job though since his return as he has turned around a team who finished 7-9 last season to a team that has started this one 5-0. Not only have they been winning but they have been winning well with a positive win margin of 61 points over the course of the season. The Saints travel to New England in the second live game on Sunday (21:25, SKY) and I think they look value to get something from the match. New Orleans are as big as 6/5 (sportingbet/WINNER/betway) to see off a New England side who have been winning but not with any confidence. Last weekend they were poor against the Bengals in a game that marked the first time in 54 games that Tom Brady did not throw a touchdown pass.
If you throw in the fact that Drew Brees has a 3-0 record against Brady in professional starts and I think all the signs point to the Saints going 6-0 with a statement victory.
Before this game we have a tie that sees between Green Bay at Baltimore (18:00, SKY). The Ravens are 3-2 this season and are 2-0 at home this season. Baltimore are the defending champions and after a slow start to the season have won three of their last four games and seem to be gelling as a unit after some changes in personnel over the summer. Bookmakers make them the 5/4 (boylesports/paddy Power/CORAL) favourites for the game.
Green Bay are 2-2 for the season and lead the head-to-head record between thesee sides 2-1. They have though not won any of their two away games this season and will be missing influential player Clay Matthews who broke his thumb last weekend in their victory over Detroit. The Packers then do not offer any appeal at 3/4 (WINNER).
I like the look of the Ravens to win the game at these prices as a unit ranked 26th against the pass will have to cope without their best defender in Clay Matthews. Baltimore have the weapons to attack on the ground and through the air. Throw in a defence that ranks second for total sacks in the season and this ranks as a game that the Ravens should be marginal favourites instead of the outsiders.
The late game on Sunday night (01:00, CHANNEL 4) is the one between NFC East rivals that has Washington at Dallas. The Cowboys go into the game on the back of a thriller with Denver that saw them push the Broncos to the limit before going down 51-48. Not only will Dallas want to bounce back from that narrow loss they will want to get revenge on a Washington side that defeated them twice last year. If you think Dallas will win this you can back them at 4/9 (boylesports).
The Redskins have had a disappointing 1-3 start to the season but the rest week will have given RG III some time to heal. A win here will have them right back in the mix in a wide open divison and they are 21/10 (BETVICTOR) for the victory. Miles Austin has 15 catches for 125 yards in three games this season and is expected to return in this game. He is currently available at 21/10 (paddy Power) to score a TD at anytime.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Baltimore to beat Green Bay, 5/4 (BOYLESPORTS/paddy Power/CORAL)
SILVER: New Orleans to beat New England, 6/5 (sportingbet/WINNER/betway)
BRONZE: Miles Austin to score a TD anytime v Dallas, 21/10 (BETVICTOR)
