Each of the MotoGP big three of Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner is odds on to occupy a Silverstone podium berth but there is a case for thinking outside the square and backing Andrea Dovizioso to make the top three.
Following a gap of 23 years, this is now the third year that the British MotoGP has been back at Silverstone, which was the first mainland track to host a British motorcycle grand prix after it was moved away from the Isle of Man in 1949.
Lorenzo (2010) and Stoner (2011) have won the British MotoGPs since the race`s return to Silverstone, both off pole, and it is no surprise to see them at the head of pre-qualifying betting at around 6-4 and 2-1 respectively.
Given their recent course form and total domination of this year`s five MotoGP rounds - Lorenzo has won three and Stoner two - one could argue that odds of around 4-11 the pair may even be on the generous side for lovers of short prices.
But maybe the best British MotoGP bet, at least for punters who do not like to back favourites or take short odds, is a play on Dovizioso finishing the race first, second or third.
A star of the lower motorcycling classes in the early to mid-2000s, Dovizioso won his first MotoGP in 2009 and, in the two most recently completed campaigns, he recorded 14 podium positions in 35 races, including back-to-back runner-up finishes in British MotoGPs at Silverstone.
Dovizioso has demonstrated not only does he enjoy racing at Silverstone but also in the United Kingdom generally. His aforementioned MotoGP victory came at Donington and he won the British events in the lower classes in 2004 and 2007.
At odds of around 5-2 to place first, second or third in what appears to one of his favourite races, Dovizioso makes more appeal than, say, 4-7 on Pedrosa making the top three.
For punters who want to have a bet on the British MotoGP winner, it does come down to either Lorenzo or Stoner. At the odds, the Australian seems like the better investment.
Stoner took out last year`s British MotoGP by more than 15 seconds after qualifying for the race two places ahead of Lorenzo. In 2010, Stoner could only manage fifth but he turned the first corner in last position and made an incredible charge through the field to go close.
One of the features of Stoner`s 2011 triumph was the state of the Silverstone circuit. It was wet and Stoner loved it. The weather forecast for the English midlands over the coming days reads rain, rain, rain, which should be the clincher for punters thinking of backing the Aussie.
