Chelsea take on Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at 19:45 tonight. The Blues are currently leading the way in the Premier League following their unbeaten run in Group G of this competition. In contrast, PSG sit third in their domestic league, two points off Lyon in pole position. They only lost one game in their opening six group stage matches in this tournament, that being against Spanish giants Barcelona away from home. The home side, however, are the favourites to pick up the win in this clash, though the encounter is expected to be a close run thing. A number of bookmakers have the Paris club at 9/5 to take down Jose Mourinho`s men, whilst an away victory can be backed at the best price of 19/10 with william hill. A draw is available at both betfred and Totesport at 9/4.
This clash is a repeat of one of last season`s quarter-finals, in which Chelsea got the better of their opponents over the two legs thanks to the away goals rule. Laurent Blanc`s Frenchmen took the advantage by claiming the initial leg 3-1. Both Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore hit the back of the net either side of a David Luiz own-goal. Chelsea`s only goal was a converted Eden Hazard penalty.
A price of 28/1 (betfred, Betvictor, Coral, ladbrokes) says the match will end in an home 3-1 win once again.
The North London side only made it through following a 2-0 victory at Stamford Bridge in their second leg. Now former players Andre Schurrle, who plies his trade at Wolfsburg, and Demba Ba, a striker for Turkish club Besiktas, netted to see their side progress through to the semi-final stage. It was at this stage where the club exited the competition, being put to the sword at the hands of Atletico Madrid to tee up an all Madrid final.
This year, Chelsea shared Group G with German side Schalke, Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon and NK Maribor of Slovenia. The Premier League champions elect netted a total of 17 times in their six group games and conceded just three goals. With half of these clashes ending with a clean sheet, Chelsea are 2/1 (bet365, Spreadex) to not concede tonight and are 7/2 (32red, 888sport, unibet) to win to nil.
Similarly, two of these three clean sheets came away from home.
Of the 17 goals bagged by the club, seven came on their travels. This is an average of over two a game. Coral have priced Chelsea up at 9/4 to grab over 1.5 goals this evening and at 9/1 to hit the back of the net over 2.5 times.
These goals have been scored by 10 different players with five of these stars hitting the back of the net on two occasions over the course of their six games. Nemanja Matic, however, is the club`s top Champions League away goalscorer with both of his two goals coming on their travels. He is 11/1 with a number of bookmakers to hit the back of the net for a third time on the road.
PSG arose from a rather more difficult Champions League group containing Dutch club Ajax, Spanish titans Barcelona and APOEL of Greece. Blanc`s boys picked up a total of 13 points from their six games, scoring 10 goals and conceding 7. The side`s only two clean sheets came in their fixtures against APOEL.
Unlike Chelsea, the Paris side have a very clear top scorer in this competition. This is Edison Cavani who has bagged a total of five goals in these group stage clashes. He can be backed at 13/2 with most bookmakers to open the scoring or at 17/1 with paddy Power to bag two or more goals.
