Premier League preview and odds: Manchester United vs Southampton

August 19 , 2016 20:00pm - Old Trafford

Premier League

The first Friday night game of the 2016-17 season will see big spending Manchester United take on last year’s top six finishers Southampton under the Old Trafford floodlights.

United looking to build on winning start

After just one game, Manchester United already sit at the top of the Premier League thanks to their superior goal difference over their rivals. New boss Jose Mourinho will be keen to follow up their comfortable home win against Bournemouth last week by grabbing their first win on home soil when the Saints pay a visit to Manchester on Friday night. With so many teams expected to be in the mix this year, gaining early momentum could be vital in the race for Premier League glory.

United`s positivity could be further boosted on Friday night by the return to the field of former player Paul Pogba. The sight of the £100m+ player would certainly stir some excitement amongst the home crowd who are desperate for their team to return to the top four this season.

Meanwhile, visitors Southampton kicked off their Premier League campaign with a draw at home to Watford last week. Claude Puel`s men had to come from behind after conceding a goal in the first 10 minutes and their persistence eventually paid off 13 minutes into the second half when 22-year-old Nathan Redmond bagged his first goal for the club since joining from Norwich in the summer.

Team news

United will start the game with a near-to-full strength squad to choose from with Pogba expected to feature after serving a one-match ban picked up in Italy.

Meanwhile, Florin Gardos is out of action for the visitors with no return date yet pencilled in.

Betting odds and tips

The Saints are unbeaten in their last three visits to Old Trafford, having won the last two by a single goal and drawn the other 1-1. With such short odds on the home win the Southampton-Draw Double Chance looks like a good value bet.
