Sara Errani of Italy will take on Spain`s Lourdes Dominguez Lino tomorrow afternoon (13:00) in the second round of the WTA Rio Open. Dominguez Lino was knocked out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage by eventual victor Kurumi Naka last year and will be hoping to make further progress as she looks to pick up only her third career title.
Despite her positive performance in the competition last season, the Spaniard is 40/1 with Coral to scoop the prize and find herself only the second winner in the two year history of the Rio Open. Errani, on the other hand, is the favourite to secure tournament success and is available at 7/4 with betfred to collect her eighth WTA title in Brazil at the end of the week.
It will come as no surprise to learn then that it is Errani who is the favourite to take the tie tomorrow afternoon. Both betway and Coral have the best price of 1/6 on the Italian seeing off Dominguez Lino. Her rival is being offered at odds of 21/4 by 888sport and unibet.
Thirty-three-year-old Dominguez Lino progressed through to the second round of the competition by beating Montserrat Gonzalez 6-2, 6-2 in her tournament opener. Errani, the number one seed, put home hope Teliana Pereira to the sword in straight sets, the Brazilian defeated 6-3, 6-3. Another straight sets victory for the Bologna-born star, who is six years Dominguez Lino`s junior, is available for backing at 1/2 with Coral and paddy Power. A second successive straight sets victory for the outsider, conversely, can be picked up at the best price of 11/1 (betfair).
The two women have played each other seven times on the WTA circuit, the favourite holding a superior 5-2 record over her Spanish opponent. Pontevedra-born Dominguez Lino sealed a victory in the initial two meetings back in 2005 and 2007 whilst former French Open finalist Errani has secured all of the last five encounters. On clay, the Italian`s record is much more slight, winning out three times over the 108 ranked player`s two. The last time the two women met in a WTA competition was back in 2013, Errani needing three sets to get the better of her rival in the Paribas Open at Indian Wells. That match finished 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Indeed, the women have needed to be separated by a third set in four of their seven encounters. These were Errani`s aforementioned victory in the USA, her win over her opponent in the first week of the Fed Cup in 2008 and in both of Dominguez Lino`s triumphs. Should you think tomorrow`s match-up will be a close run thing, you can get odds of 5/2 with ladbrokes on the women needing to play three sets. Most bookmakers are offering 7/2 on Errani winning in three sets whilst a two set to one victory for her 5`4" opponent is 11/1 (32red, 888sport, unibet). Furthermore, Dominguez Lino had to come back after losing her first set in both of her wins. She is at 18/1 at william hill to lose the first set and win the match once again.
Four of the 18 sets the women have played have ended 6-0, Errani being on the right end of this scoreline the majority of the time (three times). The betfair Exchange has 1/50 on their being a bagel victory tomorrow, with the same odds available should you think there will not be one. Errani has won the first set on six of the seven occasions and she is 2/7 with Coral to secure the opening set of the game tomorrow afternoon.
