Stan Wawrinka will look to take home the Open 13 tournament following his securing of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Sunday. The Swiss number two beat third seed Tomas Berdych, coming back from losing the first set to defeat the Czech player 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Wawrinka`s best finish in the Open 13, however, was back in 2008 failing to overturn eventual champion Andy Murray in the second round.
His opponent in the second stage tomorrow morning (8:00) will be home hope Benoit Paire. Unlike Wawrinka who received a bye to this stage of the competition, Paire faced off against compatriot Paul Henri Mathieu in the first round, Mathieu having to retire after losing the opening set 6-4. As a result, Paire has already beaten his previous best efforts in this tournament, he twice falling at the first hurdle against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2011 and Somdev Devvarman in 2013.
The betfair Exchange are offering odds of 12/5 on Stan Wawrinka walking away with the title at the end of the tournament this year whilst Paire is available at 61/1 to become the fifth different Frenchman to take the plaudits. As you might expect from these odds then, world number seven Wawrinka is the 5/19 favourite with 888sports and unibet to leave the 25-year-old for dust tomorrow morning. His Avignon-born opponent, however, can be backed at 3/1 with a number of bookmakers to get the better of his rival and pull off an unlikely victory. With his match against Mathieu in the first round ending on a technicality, a win over Wawrinka would be Paire`s first ever earned victory in the Open 13.
This meeting tomorrow will be the fifth match between the two players, the favourite holding the superior record with three victories against the Frenchman with only one loss. In ATP matches on hard court surfaces, Wawrinka holds a 2-1 record. The history between the men stretches back to 2012 with their last meeting coming in the 2014 World Tour Masters in Toronto. One-time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka had to bounce back from being one set down to take this tie 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 and is 5/1 with ladbrokes to have to come back from losing the opener again tomorrow. A victory over two sets for Wawrinka is available at 13/16 (888sports, unibet).
Paire, who is looking to claim his debut ATP title, secured his only win against the Lausanne-born star in the Canada Masters held in Montreal in 2013. The player, who is four years his opponent`s junior, saw him off in straight sets grabbing the first one with ease 6-2 before sealing the win with a tie-break in the second set.
The men have fought out two tie-breaks in the last five sets of their last two meetings. This might mean that it might be worth betting on another tie-break appearing in the match tomorrow. The betfair Exchange have 1/50 on there being one at any time tomorrow and 1/50 on there not being one. Whilst it is not possible to bet on whether the men will fight out a tie-break in the third set, should a deciding set be necessary, Coral have odds of 10/3 on there being a tie-break in either the first or second sets. Following his 2012 triumph in Buenos Aires on clay in which 6` Wawrinka was taken to three sets after dropping the second 7-5 (the match ending 6-3, 5-7, 6-2), and his three set success in Toronto, the Rotterdam champion is 10/3 with ladbrokes to put his opponent to the sword in three sets for the third time.
