Tomorrow`s evening kick-off sees Manchester City host Newcastle, the former looking to keep pace with the Premier League`s table toppers Chelsea. The Sky Blues could close the gap on Jose Mourinho`s men to four points should they beat Newcastle at home and the Stamford Bridge outfit lose out to Burnley. A defeat against John Carver`s Geordie boys, however, could see their second position come under scrutiny.
Newcastle won`t be dropping down the table tomorrow, even if they lose to Manuel Pellegrini`s reigning Premier League champions. Everton and Crystal Palace, the two teams immediately below the Magpies are five points off them, with the worst they can do being to close the gap to two points. A victory, on the other hand, could see Carver`s men rise to as high as ninth.
The two teams met back in August at St James` in what was their first game of the season. This match ended 2-0 to City but was just the first of two encounters the pair have had this campaign. Newcastle ran out the 2-0 victors over the Manchester club in their fourth round League Cup clash in October.
David Silva opened the scoring for City in the August game before their advantage was doubled in the dying embers of the game with Sergio Aguero`s effort. A goal in either half was enough for Newcastle a couple of months later with youngster Rolando Aarons bagging the first with the game less than 10 minutes young. This was prior to Moussa Sissoko making sure of the Magpies` progression through to the quarter-final with a 75th minute goal.
The North East club were knocked out of the tournament at this quarter-final stage, defeated by Tottenham four goals to nil.
Despite having lost to Newcastle previously, Manchester City are the strong favourites to scoop the win and do the league double over Carver`s men. Most bookmakers are offering 3/10 on the Citizens claiming the win in tomorrow`s 5:30 kick-off. A correct score prediction of 2-0 to City will see punters receive winnings to the tune of 6/1 (Numerous).
United are the outsiders then, with the best price for a win for the Toon Army being at 12/1 with william hill. Should you think that Newcastle can bag another 2-0 win against the men in Sky Blue, you can claim odds of 33/1 with most betting establishments.
A draw can be backed at 11/2 with betfair.
The home side are currently without a win in three in all competitions at the Etihad, succumbing to a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the League before relinquishing their places in the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Middlesbrough. In their last home match, City drew 1-1 with the struggling Hull.
Pellegrini`s men have scored nine goals in their last five matches at the Etihad Stadium. Silva, a scorer on the opening day of the season, has netted three times in these clashes at home. The in-form Spaniard is 12/5 with Spreadex to add to his tally at any time tomorrow evening.
John Carver has been in charge of Newcastle since Alan Pardew left the post to take control of Crystal Palace just at the tail end of 2014. In this time, the born and raised Geordie has been in charge of four matches away from home and has managed a win, a draw and a loss. One of these loss saw Newcastle knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Leicester.
The visitors have score nine goals in the seven matches under Carver`s tenure. The scorers of most of these goals have been Jack Colback and Yoan Gouffran with two goals each. They can be backed at 18/1 and 9/1 respectively (both 32red, 888sport, unibet).
