Aston Villa will look to go four games without a defeat as they take on Swansea at home tomorrow. Tim Sherwood`s men have successfully risen from the relegation places to find themselves in 16th, three points from the dreaded drop zone. A further win tomorrow could see them usurp Hull and move six points clear of Burnley in the final relegation spot. A loss, on the other hand, could reverse all the hard work laid down under the former Tottenham manager should the Clarets beat Southampton and Sunderland get the better of West Ham.
Swansea are in no danger of relegation having already reached the magical 40 point threshold. In ninth position, they could move up a Premier League place should they secure all three points at Villa Park and other results go their way. Failure to win, however, could see Garry Monk`s side drop into 10th.
The two clubs have just met the once this season, this being in the Premier League in the reverse fixture at the Liberty Stadium. On that occasion it was the home team who ruled supreme, the Swans managing to grab the one goal that proved enough to see off Villa, who were then under the management of former manager Paul Lambert.
That one goal came from Gylfi Sigurdsson who was able to convert a free-kick in the 13th minute of the match. bet365 have the best price on Swansea running out the 1-0 victors once again, those odds being 8/1. Sigurdsson can be backed at a price of 9/1 (boylesports, Spreadex) to once again break the deadlock. Otherwise, it is 23/10 with betway should you think that the two teams will once again be separated by a margin of one goal come the final whistle.
Indeed, despite their defeat at the hands of the Whites back in December, it is Villa who are the favourites to continue their resurgence and take down Monk`s men. The West Midlands club are the 6/4 favourites with most bookmakers to send Swansea back to Wales empty-handed. Alternatively, the visitors are a 9/1 chance with boylesports to claim the win whilst a draw is available at a price of 23/10 (bet365, sportingbet).
Sherwood has been in charge of Villa for five matches, four of these being top tier games and the fifth being an FA Cup clash. In the league, his team have won two and lost two having also made it to the quarter-final of the cup competition.
Villa have scored nine goals under Sherwood and have conceded just four. They have earned themselves clean sheets in both of their last two games. Both Gabby Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke hit braces in their side`s 4-0 victory over Sunderland last weekend. The pair also helped themselves to a goal a-piece in their 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League. As a result, these players are the top scorers under the Englishman and can be backed at 7/2 and 12/5 (both Stan James) respectively to hit the back of the net at any time tomorrow.
Villa are a 3/1 (Betvictor, Skybet, Totesport) shout of racking up their third successive win to nil.
Swansea have something of a mixed recent away record in the top tier of English football, having secured seven points from their last five matches. They have also scored seven goals in these games, letting in six. With an average of scoring just under 1.5 goals a game, Swansea can be backed at 12/5 with Coral to score over 1.5.
Despite having a sloppy defensive record in these games, the Swans have kept two clean sheets in these last five away matches. A Whites win to nil can be backed at 17/4 (Betvictor).
