The Echo Arena in Liverpool is the home for the Premier League Darts this Thursday night and with just two weeks remaining and play-off spots up for grabs it is all to play for.
As predicted here before the tournament began Michael Van Gerwen is looking good to finish top of the regular season standings. Van Gerwen has 20 points from 14 games and it is as short as 1/20 (888 SPORT) that he wraps up the regular season title. Raymond Van Barneveld is a 11/1 (888 SPORT) chance as he sits three points behind his countyman and has a game in hand. Barney has a double header on the last day and his health issues means I would not want to be relying on him to win both games.
The opener Thursday night has Michael Van Gerwen up against Andy Hamilton. It is likely the Dutchman will win but I will not be rushing to side with him at 4/11 (bet365/BETVICTOR/SPREADEX). Hamilton meanwhile can be backed at 6/1 (SKYBET/paddy Power). Hamilton +3.5 is priced at evens with paddy Power and this looks decent as he is not the kind of player to give up on a game with every leg mattering to him. In addition each of the last three Van Gerwen games have gone the distance.
The second game of the evening pits James Wade against Simon Whitlock and Wade is the 11/10 (ladbrokes) favourite while Whitlock can be backed at 15/8 (GENERAL) and the draw is 9/2 (BETVICTOR). I think you have to side with the Australian here as he has won three of his last four with his one defeat coming to Taylor which is standard when those two meet. Wade was poor against Van Barneveld last week and the 6/4 (BETVICTOR) on the Wizard in the draw no bet market looks the way to play this.
Up next is the battle between Robert Thornton and Phil Taylor with the Scot needing to win to keep alive his hopes of the play-offs. Taylor meanwhile knows a win here will secure his place in the last four. Taylor is a deserved favourite but 8/15 (GENERAL) looks a little short while Thornton at 4/1 (GENERAL) looks a lively outsider.
Raymond Van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis meet in the fourth game of the evening and I find hard to have an opion on this game. Lewis is a nightmare at all times and he could produce anything here. Those who do want a bet on this game can get Barney at 8/15 (GENERAL) while Lewis is 4/1 (sportingbet/ladbrokes/CORAL).
The final game of the evening puts James Wade up against Andy Hamilton and this looks a tough game to call with Wade the deserved favourite but unbackable at 4/7 (GENERAL) and the value lying a little more with Hamilton at 4/1 (SKYBET). The later games of the double headers have tended to go long with three of the four going the distance though bookmakers have clocked this and any value in this market has gone.
For the final bet of the week try one of the Premier League specials and take a punt on the highest checkout being over 144.5 (CORAL) at 5/6. This bet would have paid out in five of the last seven weeks including each of the last two. With the play-offs in sight players will be pulling out all the stops to make sure they make the last four.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Simon Whitlock to beat James Wade, draw no bet market, 6/4 (BETVICTOR)
SILVER: Andy Hamilton +3.5 against Michael Van Gerwen, Evens (paddy Power)
BRONZE: Highest checkout in the week being over 144.5, 5/6 (CORAL)
