Christmas Day 2003 and media mogul Simon Fuller launched on the world his newest TV show, World Idol. The idea was to take the winners from a number of the Idol formats around the world and have them compete against each other. So while Kelly Clarkson and Will Young have gone on to have major music careers it was actually Norwegian Kurt Nilsen who won the show. The show never carried on though probably because it lacked the shock factor and quirky show choice of the other major international song competition, Eurovision. Here is our guide to the best of the bets from the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest.
Malmo, Sweden, is the host for the 58th annual Eurovision Song Contest after victory last year from Loreen performing Euphoria. Just across the water from Southern Sweden is Copenhagen and a large Danish contingent should descend on Malmo Arena to cheer on their act Emmelie de Forest who performs the song Only Teardrops. The track is catchy number that went down well in the arena at the semi-finals. That being said though it looks a terrible price at 8/11 (boylesports) for victory. My advice is to stay clear of the outright market as this song has a huge betting momentum behind it yet is much too short to bet on. Four of the top five in the betting are all songs by females with Norway the 15/2 (betfred) second favourite, Ukraine are 12/1 (sportingbet/BWIN) chances while Russia are 16/1 (GENERAL). The only male sung song to feature high in the betting is Azerbaijan which is 14/1 (betfred) all five songs are capable of running Denmark close though none of them have that real wow factor. Songs that may go well at bigger prices are Georgia at 40/1 (boylesports) whose track is penned by the writers of the winning song last year and Germany at 40/1 (betfred) who are reprsented by a big star in Europé in Cascada. Those thinking Bonnie Tyler can do the business can get 100/1 (betfred/BWIN) although a nice enough song the problem is it is a grower which does not work in Eurovision. I like a couple of bets in the to finish in the top ten market. Firstly, host Sweden are 9/5 (bet365) to finish top ten and I think the should manage this as they have sent a very nice likeable song. While not pulling in many 12 point scores it will get some solid six and eight point scores. The host vote always pulls in some scores from other nations as thanks for the party and the Swedes are a likeable bunch who know how to host a good party. Three of the last five hosting nations have finished in the top ten (with one finishing 11th and the other an appalling song from Norway). Another song I really like the look of to finish in the top ten is Finland. I have been keen on this track for a while and had this as a real value selection to win the event though the draw has been a little cruel to it (fourth). The song though is a very catchy number that sounds like early Pink and has an instant appeal and surround by some poor early songs should stand out. You can get this to finish top ten at 23/10 (bet365).
The final bet is taking Ireland to finish as the Top Western European nation at 3/1 (BETVICTOR). First you can remove Belgium, France and the United Kingdom from this market leaving a straight choice between Ireland and the Netherlands. The song from the Netherlands is really quite slow and could be forgotten by the end while the Irish have the beauty of being the last song to perform and should be fresh in the mind for voting.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Sweden to finish in the top ten, 9/5 (bet365)
SILVER: Finland to finish in the top ten, 23/10 (bet365)
BRONZE: Ireland to be Top Western European nation at 3/1, (BETVICTOR)
