Wigan made history on Saturday when they became the 43rd side to lift the FA Cup. On Tuesday they could make history for a different reason, becoming the first side to win the FA Cup and go on to be relegated that season. Here is our guide to the best of the bets from their crucial game with Arsenal and the game between Reading and Man City.
Wigan are 17/2 (BETVICTOR) to pick up all three points at the Emirates and they will be buoyed by that FA Cup victory over Man City. Roberto Martinez will also be able to remind his men that they won at the Emirates last season. This game is a must win as although they are just four points behind Sunderland the Black Cats have a much better goal difference. Winning at Arsenal will not be easy though as the Gunners have taken 14 points from their last six matches. Arsenal also need all three points as a late Emmanuel Adebayor goal moved Tottenham above them in the race for the Champions League by two points. It is 4/11 (bet365/CORAL/william hill) that Arsenal secure the victory that will relegate Wigan. The Gunners have drawn their last two home games and it is 19/4 (BETVICTOR) that this game ends drawn a result that will be of benefit to neither side. I think there must be some value in the under 2.5 goals market in this game at 7/4 (GENERAL). The last four Arsenal games have gone under 2.5 with three them of them going under 1.5 goals. Although people think of Wigan games as being super open and full of goals this might not be the case here. The return of Antolin Alcaraz may make a huge difference as Wigan have conceded just five goals in the last eight games the Paraguayan has played. The first goalscorer market is headed by Theo Walcott at 5/1 (888 SPORT) who has scored the last two Arsenal goals and Lukas Podolski 5/1 (GENERAL). The value for me is in taking Wigan winger Callum McManaman at 16/1 (GENERAL) or 11/2 (CORAL/william hill) to score anytime. The winger was the man of the match in the FA Cup final and has now scored five goals in his last 13 games.
By the time you read this Roberto Mancini may or may not be the Man City manager it is though only a matter of time before he gets the sack. After a terrible performance in the FA Cup I will not be trusting Man City at 8/15 (GENERAL) despite the fact that they should have too much class for Reading. City in fact have won just two of their last seven away games in the league. I can not find much reason to get behind the Royals as the gulf in class between these sides is huge and 13/2 (bet365/SKYBET) the Reading win or 7/2 (GENERAL) the draw does not appeal to me. It might be worth an interest on the 3/2 (betway) that Reading can keep a clean sheet in the first half as the defence has improved under Nigel Adkins. Reading have kept a clean sheet in their last two home games including keeping out Liverpool. The Royals also kept Man City out until the 90th minute at the Etihad.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Under 2.5 goals in game between Arsenal and Wigan, 7/4 (GENERAL)
SILVER: Callum McManaman to score v Arsenal, first 16/1 (GENERAL), anytime 11/2 (CORAL/WILLIAM HILL)
BRONZE: Reading to keep clean sheet in first half v Man City, 3/2 (betway)
