Aston Villa and Sunderland meet in a crucial relegation match on Monday night. Here is our guide to the best of the bets from this game and a look at how the relegation markets are shaping up.
Bookmakers have Aston Villa as the 13/10 (GENERAL) favourites to win the game while the draw is 12/5 (GENERAL) and a Sunderland victory is 12/5 (GENERAL). Villa did not stand a chance against a Robin Van Persie inspired Man United last week but before that were in good form winning three and drawing one of the previous five. Sunderland meanwhile have seen their fortunes reverse following the appointment of Paulo Di Canio who has lead them to two key victories in a row. Villa won at the Stadium of Light however this is a very different Black Cats team from then and they can take heart from the fact they have lost just one of their last five at Villa Park. This looks a tough game to call between two sides who are moving in the right direction and as such I will be recommending a watching brief .
The first goalscorer market is headed by Christian Benteke at 19/4 (youwin) who has netted 15 times this season and always looks the main threat for Villa going forward. Gabriel Agbonlahor is 15/2 (SPREADEX) to net the opener while Andreas Weimann is 8/1 (CORAL). In terms of Sunderland players Danny Graham is 8/1 (SPREADEX/BWIN ) to net the first goal. The value to me though lies in backing Stephane Sessegnon who has turned his form around after a disappointing season and has netted four in his last eight including in each of his last two. In a game that could feature a number of goals then it might make sense to take him in the ANYTIME scorer market where he can be backed at 10/3 (888 SPORT). Staying with the player markets and I like the look of any goalkeeper in the MAN OF THE MATCH market. Simon Mingolet has been in inspired form in recent weeks and if he can keep Villa at bay here then he could land this award. You can get 16/1 (BETVICTOR) on any keeper being named man of the match.
Victory for either side could be crucial in the battle to avoid relegation following the results at the weekend. A late own goal by Wigan saw them gain just one point rather than three against Tottenham and has seen them fall to 3/4(betway) for the drop. Wigan sit on 32 points from 34 games though they do still have some winnable games in hand. A visit to West Brom and a home game with Swansea are next on the horizon and the Latics could pick up points in these games. An away game with Arsenal will follow before a final home game with Aston Villa. Take the 11/10 (bet365/BETVICTOR/paddy Power) on them pulling off the miracle escape once more. If not Wigan for the drop then who will fill that third spot? Aston Villa are the side in most danger and are 21/10 (bet365) for relegation while Newcastle are still 12/1 (ladbrokes) for the drop despite a 6-0 loss at home to Liverpool. I said a few weeks ago that the Magpies at 25/1 looked good for the drop and even at 12/1 I can not put you off backing them if you have not yet got involved. Newcastle have just one home game from the remaining three and that is against an Arsenal side gunning for the Champions League. Other sides still not safe yet are Norwich 25/1 (bet365), Sunderland 33/1 (bet365) and Southampton 100/1 (BWIN).
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Wigan to stay in Premier League, 11/10 (BET365/paddy Power)
SILVER: Stephane Sessegnon to score anytime v Aston Villa, 10/3 (888 SPORT)
