After three week break the Formula One seasons returns with Barcelona set to host the Spanish Grand Prix. Here is our guide to the best of the bets from the race.
The Circuit de Catalunya is hosting the Spanish Grand Prix for the 23rd time time this weekend and it is venue that drivers know well. Not only is it one of the longest running venues on the circuit is also one of the pre-season testing tracks. Sebastian Vettel is the market favourite at 9/4 (BETVICTOR/william hill) to win the race this Sunday. The Red Bull is the deserved favourite after a dominant performance last time out in Bahrain. The following three weeks though have given other cars ample time to work on things and I think the Red Bull looks worth taking on here. Fernando Alonso is 3/1 ( TOTESPORT/betfred/william hill) to win his home Grand Prix. The Spaniard has only won the race once but he has appeared on the podium in seven of the 11 races there. He is 4/9 (GENERAL) to finish the race on the podium again this weekend. Kimi Raikkonen 9/2 (GENERAL) is another expected to go well here and he is statistically the most successful driver in the field at this venue with two wins (2005 and 2008) and a podium finish in 2012. The Lotus driver is 8/11 (william hill) for a place on the podium as he has done in three of the four races so far this season. Mark Webber is next in the betting at 12/1 (GENERAL) and the Australian is a former winner here (2010) and has two top four finishes here in recent years (third in 2009 and fourth in 2011). Webber is 11/4 (BETVICTOR) to finish on the podium. Lewis Hamilton is a 16/1 (188 BET/betway) chance to win the race and 11/4 (bet365/888 SPORT/WILLIAM HILL) to finish on the podium. This look on the generous side considering how well he does in qualifying and his recent record has two thirds and a fourth. Take him to finish on the podium at those odds of 11/4 or each-way at 14/1 (GENERAL) which pays a fifth the odds the top three.
The best bet on this race to me is in taking the 5/4 (888 SPORT) available on the driver starting on Pole Position to go on and win the race. Barcelona is a tough track to overtake on with just 30 overtakes here last year (less than one every two laps). 17 previous winners of this event (from 22 runnings) have started from Pole Position including 11 of the last 12. Another market you might want to consider is a lay of Sebastian Vettel in the Pole Position market. The Red Bull driver only qualified here in seventh place last year and when winning it in 2011 only started in second behind Mark Webber. Vettel has struggled with qualifying and in both Bahrain and China the Red Bull could not match the speed of the Mercedes which seems set up for qualifying. You can get Lewis Hamilton at 6/1 (betfred/ladbrokes) to finish in Pole Position while Nico Rosberg is 8/1 (GENERAL) or you can get both drivers on side at 3/1 (SKYBET/ladbrokes) in the Qualifying Winning Car market. Hamilton did in fact qualify fastest in Spain last year though was forced to start at the back of the grid because of a violation of fuel rules.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: The driver on Pole Position to win the Spanish GP, 5/4 (888 SPORT)
SILVER: Lewis Hamilton to finish on the podium in Spanish GP, 11/4 (bet365/888 SPORT/WILLIAM HILL).
BRONZE: Lewis Hamilton to win the Spanish GP, 16/1 (188 BET/betway)
