The event known as the fifth major of Golf, The Players Championship, takes place this weekend and here is our guide to the best of the bets from the tournament.
The TPC at Sawgrass is the venue as ever for the 40th staging of The Players Championship as action gets underway on Thursday evening. Tiger Woods is the 8/1 (GENERAL) market for the event and he looks worth taking on. Woods always has to be respected though this is not his favourite course having won here just once and holding an average finishing position of 25th in this event. Adam Scott and Luke Donald are both 18/1 (GENERAL) in the betting. Scott could be a contender as he has the game to suit the venue. The Australian though is making his first appearance since winning the US Masters and the demands and pressure of the media might just be too much for him this time around. Donald meanwhile is another who commands respect and with three top six finishes here the Englishman should be in the mix. Other player featuring high in the betting are Rory McIlroy at 20/1 (sportingbet/CORAL), Phil Mickelson at 25/1 (GENERAL), Lee Westwood at 25/1 (GENERAL), Justin Rose at 28/1 (GENERAL) and Sergio Garcia at 30/1 (GENERAL). Before I recommend the winners of the event I want to offer a couple of players to look for in running. Justin Rose and Brandt Snedeker both fit key stat trends though both have struggled at this venue. Snedeker especially has struggled missing the last four cuts. If both can get over those early hurdles then they look worth considering for adding to a portfolio at a later stage.
So what do history tell us to look for when trying to find the winner? Well nine of the last 13 winners ranked in the top ten for Greens in Regulation while just two winners of the last eight have ranked outside the top ten in scrambling. Bill Haas ranks in the top ten of each of these key catagories (ninth in Greens in Regulation and tenth in Scrambling) and at 80/1 (GENERAL) looks great value in the each-way market. Though Haas failed to make the cut last time out I am not too worried about this as conditions were very difficult and very different to here. Haas had made the cut in his nine previous tournaments and has five top ten finishes this season. He has the game that is suited to the venue. The second name that looks value in the betting markets is Kevin Streelman at 80/1 (GENERAL) Streelman is a player in form with top six finishes in his last two starts in addition he ranks tenth in scoring average and is an excellent driver. His course form also holds with a top 20 finish here at Sawgrass in 2011. It makes sense to side with the form player at such a big price. Another for the betting portfolio will be David Toms who at 100/1 (GENERAL) looks a value bet. Toms has a good record at the course and has a second in 2011 and two top ten finishes in the last four years. He also finished a respectable 13th in the Masters and ranks well in key catagories such as sixth in driving accuracy and top 25 in par four performances and scrambling.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Bill Haas EW Players Championship, 80/1 (GENERAL)
SILVER: Kevin Streelman EW Players Championship, 80/1 (GENERAL)
BRONZE: David Toms EW Players Championship, 100/1 (GENERAL)
