Justin Rose became the first Englishman since Nick Faldo in 1996 to win a major and the first to win the US Open since Tony Jacklin in 1970. Just a few days later and Rose is back in action in the Travelers Championship. Rose is the 16/1 (paddy Power/STAN JAMES/CORAL) favourite for the event and you can see why as confidence will be high after winning the major. The Englishman was three clear after 54 holes in this event three years ago (the last time he played it) though went on to blow the lead. If the US Open can give him the confidence to hold these leads then who knows how many trophies Rose can win. Rose will have a had tough week of media commitments not to mention the energy exhausted in winning the US Open so I will look to swerve Rose.
Also look to swerve the second favourite Hunter Mahan who collapsed under the pressure Sunday in the US Open and may not be mentally right for this tournament. He can be backed at 18/1 (BETVICTOR/STAN JAMES) to win this event and his form here is good having won this event, finishing second twice and fourth once. In addition he hit a stunning 61 here twelve months ago. Mahan obviously has the game though I wonder if his head will be right at the moment.
Rickie Fowler was our selection last week for the US Open and a poor second round cost him badly. That said though Fowler played some good golf and it might be just a case of right player, wrong week. Fowler then once again is our selection and he finished 13th here last time he played (2010) which included a last round 66 that showed he was getting the hang of the course. BETVICTOR and paddy Power are paying out each-way on the first six places so side with Fowler at one of these firms at odds of 28/1.
As five of the last seven players to win here where losing their maiden tags it might also make sense to go in with a second player at bigger prices. James Driscoll is the choice at odds of 80/1 (paddy Power). Driscoll is a course specialist who has made the cut here on his four previous visits. Last year he finished tied 18th and the year before finished fifth. His form is good also as he finished tied 13th at Memorial on his last appearance on a golf course. Take the each-way value.
On the European Tour the BMW International Open is the event this week. Munich, Germany is the location and bookmakers make Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson the 14/1 (GENERAL) joint favourites.
Danny Willett won this event in 2012 and is 80/1 (GENERAL) for the repeat though I am far more interested in the form for 2011 when this event was last played at this course. Pablo Larrazabal was the winner then seeing off Garcia in a play-off. You can back the Spaniard at 29/1 (888 SPORT). The best bet for me though is on a golfer who finished tied for third in 2011 and is in great form winning the Lyonness Open last time out on the golf course. Joost Luiten is the player and the Dutchman can be backed at 30/1 with SPREADEX.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Rickie Fowler to win the Travelers Championship, 28/1 (BETVICTOR/paddy Power)
SILVER: Joost Luiten to win the BMW International Open, 30/1 (SPREADEX)
BRONZE: James Driscoll to win the Traverlers Championship, 80/1 (paddy power)
