The most significant week in the flat racing calendar gets underway Tuesday (18th June) and brings with it a number of betting opportunities. Here is our guide to the best of the bets from the opening day of action at Royal Ascot.

First things first let us get to the bet I know you are all waiting for, what colour hat the Queen will be wearing on Tuesday? I have done the research and found that in the last seven years (in chronological order) the Queen has worn the following colours: Blue, Green, Torquoise, Yellow, Cream, Pink and Blue. If the pattern is to be repeated then Pink would be the next in line so feel free to get involved should you so wish.

Ryan Moore (leading rider here for the last three years) is the 9/4 (GENERAL) favourite to be top Jockey while Joseph O’Brien is 3/1 (STAN JAMES) and Richard Hughes is 9/2 (TOTESPORT/betfred/ladbrokes). The value could be on William Buick who rides Ascot very well and has a number of good rides from the John Gosden yard. Buick was available at 10/1 at time of writing.

The first race of the day is the Queen Anne Stakes with the market headed by Animal Kingdom. It looks a tricky one for the betting point of view as this horse is likely to go odds on and this looks a little short as it has never run on a straight mile. That being said though the horse is well clear on official ratings and could win this with ease. betfred are the bookmakers to be with if you think so as they will pay out 9/4 on the winner on SP bets placed from 8.00am (BST) Tuesday morning up to a maximum stake of £zero.

Following the Queen Anne Stakes is the King’s Stand Stakes with the market headed by Shea Shea who has two fine victories at Dubai and looks the bet of the day on Tuesday. Reckless Abandon and Swiss Spirit are likely to hold some challenge but the M F De Kock runner should have too much speed for his rivals.

Dwan Approach and Magician do battle in the St James’s Palace Stakes (3:45) in the battle of the 2,000 Guineas winners. This looks a fascinating duel though I would not be shocked to see another horse spoil the party and land the victory. Perhaps Toranado who was unbeaten as a Juvenile and looked good when winning at Ascot on a previous occasion.

The fourth race of the afternoon is the Coventry Stakes with the top four in the market coming from the red-hot training duo of A P O’Brien (Stubbs and Sir John Hawkins) and Richard Hannon (Championship and Thunder Strike).

Tiger Cliff is the favourite for the Ascot Stakes (17:00) though no favourite has won this in the past eleven years. The Windsor Castle Stakes (17:35) betting is headed by Aniticipated just one of four Richard Hannon runners. With 28 runners it is the sort of race that could lend to some each-way value and I recommend Homeric who won last time out at Ascot.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Shea Shea to win the King’s Stand Stakes (15:05), best morning price
SILVER: William Buick to be the top Jockey at Royal Ascot, best available price
BRONZE: Homeric EW in the Windsor Castle Stakes (17:35), best morning price
