Wigan entertain Doncaster in the Championship on Tuesday evening (20th) in a game that was rearranged from earlier this season as the Latics were in action in the Community Shield.
Bookmakers make Wigan 8/13 (CORAL) for victory as they look to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday. It was not an afternoon to remember for Owen Coyle whose misery was compounded by a red card for Callum McManaman.
Doncaster had the best away record in the Championship last season winning more (15) games than anyone else. Rovers will take heart from the fact that fellow promoted side Bournemouth beat Wigan and from their own performance in beating Blackburn 2-0 on Friday evening. If you think they can get another good away result then the draw is available at 10/3 while a Doncaster victory is 6/1 (BETVICTOR/STAN JAMES).
I would expect Wigan to win this game though the prices reflect this so I would look for other ways to get involved in this game. Grant Holt has netted a goal in four of his last five league appearances (three for Norwich and one for Wigan) and the Wigan forward is evens (boylesports/betfred) to score anytime. Shaun Maloney is a 17/10 (paddy Power) chance, Marc Antoine Fortune is a 23/10 (paddy Power) shot, while those looking for a player at a bigger price might want to consider a little interest on Emerson Boyce at 14/1 (betfred) as he has scored twice in the last three league games at the DW Stadium.
Those looking for a Doncaster scorer might want to consider the 11/4 (william hill) on Theo Robinson who scored on his debut on Friday while Billy Paytner is also 11/4 (william hill) to score anytime.
Wigan to win 1-0 is the favourite in the correct score market though Wigan have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last 15 games while Donny have found the net away from home in 18 of their last 21 games. In fact each of the last three Wigan home games has seen both the home team and the away team score at least twice. In addition ten of the last 12 Doncaster games in the Championship have seen both teams score. The bet then might be to take YES in the both teams to score market which is on offer at evens with BETVICTOR.
In terms of the outright markets those who fancy Wigan can back them at 10/1 (ladbrokes/CORAL) though they are currently only the fifth favourites. The betting is headed by QPR at 9/2 (GENERAL) though the Hoops are still struggling to create and assistant Kevin Bond admitted as such in the post game interview after their 90th minute winner to beat Ipswich. They will no doubt be in the mix come the end of the season though right now that prices does not appeal. Watford are the 11/2 (GENERAL) second favourites and they kept their unbeaten run going after fighting back from two goals down against Reading at the weekend. The Royal themselves are a 9/1 (GENERAL) chance. It is Nottingham Forest though who head the table and at 8/1 (CORAL) they offer some appeal.
One side who have started the season well and have slipped under the radar are Burnley who are 7/4 (STAN JAMES) to finish in the top 12 which is very generous considering they have taken seven points from their first three games and in Vokes and Ings have a very dangerous strike partnership. Also take the 9/4 (SKYBET) that they finish in the top half.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Burnley to finish in the top 12, 7/4 (STAN JAMES)
SILVER: Burnley to finish in the top half, 9/4 (SKYBET)
BRONZE: Both teams to score Wigan v Doncaster, evens (BETVICTOR)
