I once visited Singapore and it was a lovely city, very clean and friendly, though hot, very hot. The moment you left any air-conditioned building you felt the heat and the heat is certainly what Fernando Alonso will be feeling both on and off the track. The Spaniard has seen his lead in the Formula One Drivers title cut to 37 points, can the chasing pack continue to apply the pressure on Alonso this weekend?
Having won the last three races on three very different tracks McLaren are the deserved favourites in Singapore with Lewis Hamilton 5/2 (BetVictor) for victory. Despite a contract dispute between the Brit and his team nothing should distract both sides this weekend with the title race still wide open. Hamilton has a knack of extracting the best from his car especially on street circuits and went well here under the lights in 2009. He will enter the race in great form with two wins from the last three races. I think he must be respected alongside team-mate Jenson Button. Button was second last time out in Italy before that winning in Belgium. The Brit came second here last year and he is 6/1 (Bodog) to go one better this year. To me you can not ignore the McLarens and I would recommend the 11/10 (general) on a McLaren to win the race as a small savour on our main bet.
Our main bet in Singapore is to take Sebastian Vettel for victory. The track is similar to Valenica (the home of the European Grand Prix) and Vettel qualified in front there. The German is unlikely to be let down by mechanical problems again and looked good winning here in 2011. One thing to note is that qualifying is hugely important at this track as the last three drivers to have gone off from pole-position have gone on to win this race with the last two dominating from the start to the finish. 7/1 (general) is a great price on the best driver in a highly competitive car.
Others expected to be in the mix in Singapore are current championship leader Fernando Alonso (5/1-general), Mark Webber (18/1-general) and Sergio Perez (who was second last time out and is 33/1-general). The Lotus duo of Kimi Raikkonen (91/10-pinnacle) and Romain Grosjean (161/10-pinnacle) are also expected to go well. Alonso has a good record here and is expected to be in the mix but I can not be backing him at that price, nor can I be backing Webber or Perez. I like the Lotus duo though I would be more interested in them in the Fastest Lap market as they are still having problems with qualification. Raikkonen is a standout 9/1 with BetVictor for the Fastest Lap. This is good odds as the Lotus has shown that it is capable of producing some fast times. In addition the Finn also has the fastest lap set at this venue.
Another bet I would recommend is backing Mercedes to go well this weekend. You can get 4/6 (general) that Schumacher and Rosberg get among the points. Ross Brawn and his team have done some improvement on the car and a new exhaust layout is ready to race this weekend. Brawn expects the new layout to be ideal for the Singapore circuit. Schumacher is able to get the most out of cars on street circuits (he had pole in Monaco before a grid penalty) and they could be worth chancing at 25/1 (ladbrokes) to have the fastest car in qualifying.
