Premier League

Southampton have had a remarkable start to the season and although they lost to both Arsenal and Chelsea in recent games they should take comfort from their performances. The Saints are 8/11 (BETVICTOR) to defeat Aston Villa and register a sixth successive home win. If they do it will mark a third straight victory over Villa after doing the double over them in the Premier League last season.

Aston Villa are 19/4 (bet365/sportingbet) as they look to register only their second victory from their last eight games. Away from home though they are unbeaten in their last four, with the last three ending in draws and this game to end all square is 14/5 (GENERAL). Rickie Lambert scored three times in the two meetings between these sides last season and he is 7/4 (BETVICTOR/888 SPORT/unibet) to net at anytime here. Jay Rodriguez has netted four times in his last seven Premier League games and he is 11/5 (SPREADEX) to net anytime. For Villa goals have been hard to come by with the Midlands side failing to score in five of their last seven matches. Christian Benteke is on a goal drought and is 11/4 (SKYBET) to score while possible replacement Libor Kozak is a 9/2 (BWIN) chance.

The best bet in this game is the 11/10 (BETVICTOR) on the first goal coming over the 27th minute. Six of the last seven Villa games have seen the first goal scored after the 30th minute.

Stoke were abject in their 4-0 defeat at Everton at the weekend and I can not be siding with them at 11/10 (GENERAL) to see off Cardiff. A victory over Sunderland at their own ground marked their only win in their last ten Premier League games. At home they have lost to Norwich and drawn with Southampton and West Brom and I think Cardiff can get something out of their visit to the Britannia. The Welsh side have picked up points from visits to Norwich and Hull while taking all three from a trip to Fulham. Take Cardiff with a 0.5 start on the Asian Handicap at odds of 16/19 (BETVICTOR). This bet will pay out in full if the game ends in a draw or an away win.

Sunderland are slowly but surely getting themselves together under Gus Poyet and the former Chelsea midfielder will love to get one over his former team on Wednesday. The Black Cats are the 11/2 (GENERAL) outsiders though will take some comfort from a run of three straight home victories that included a defeat of Man City. Chelsea have lost two of their last three away from home in all competitions and as such I can not be backing them at 4/7 (GENERAL) despite such an impressive second half showing against Southampton on Sunday.

Those looking for anytime goalscorer market will struggle to name the Chelsea striker as Mourinho has yet to settle on a player to start on a regular basis. I thought Dembe Ba did well off the bench against Southampton and the former Newcastle man could be value at 28/17 (888 SPORT/unibet) if he is handed the start.

The best bet in this game though is in the both teams to score market where YES is available at a generous price of evens (boylesports). This would have paid in each of the last five meetings between the duo at the Stadium of Light. In addition it would have paid in four of the last five home games for the Black Cats and six of the last eight Chesea games in the Premier League.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Cardiff +0.5 on Asian Handicap v Stoke, 16/19 (BETVICTOR)
SILVER: First goal after 27th min, Southampton v Aston Villa, 11/10 (BETVICTOR)
BRONZE: YES both teams to score Sunderland v Chelsea, evens (boylesports)
