The final night of First Round action in the PDC World Championship takes place on Thursday and here is a guide to the best of the bets from the evening.
The opening match (19:20) sees Mark Webster take on Mensur Suljovic with the winner to face John Henderson (who saw off Dave Chisnall) in Round Two.
Bookmakers make Webster the 8/15 (sportingbet/SPREADEX) favourite for the game as he is the better known of the two players. Webster though is sliding in his career with his year on the circuit not great while Suljovic is a player on the rise. The Austrian reached the semi-final of the European Darts Trophy and in November made the semi-finals of a Players event in Wigan. The Gentle can be backed at 7/4 (GENERAL) to win the match though I like the idea of taking him with a 1.5 start on the handicap at odds of 11/13 (BWIN).
The second battle of the evening (20:00) is the game between the qualifiers as Gino Vos takes on Royden Lam. Vos is the 8/13 (boylesports) favourite for the game though as has been shown throughout the tournament so far this is far too short a price to take on such a quick game. His opponent Lam is making his debut after winning the Chinese qualifier and can be backed at 6/4 (GENERAL) for victory. The winner of the game will go up against the eighth seed Wes Newton who is looking to build on his quarter-final appearance from last year and he is 1/6 (paddy Power) for the victory and 4/5 with the same firm to win in straight sets.
Up third for the evening (20:30) is James Wade who taking on Darren Webster. Webster has dones little in recent years though did produce a remarkable performance to reach the last eight here in 2007.
The Machine has made the semi-final here in the last two years and should go deep into the tournament this year. Wade is worth taking at 11/10 (YOU WIN) to win the game in straight sets as he looks down to put down a marker ahead of the Second Round.
Bringing the curtain down on the evening and the First Round as a whole is the clash between Kevin Painter and Tomas Seyler (22:30). The Artist is the 13th seed and a runner-up in this event in 2004. Painter is always a dangerous opponent who tends to care of business in the opener having only fallen at this stage once in the last six years and he can be backed at 3/10 (betway/BWIN). His year on the Tour has not been anything special though he did make a Players final in October which indicates he is in reasonable form coming into the event.
Tomas Seyler is a German player who has appeared three times previously though has never made past the opening round. Known by the nickname Shorty the 39-year-old tends to struggle in front of the cameras and is 3/1 (boylesports/ladbrokes) to win the game. I will side with Painter at 4/6 (bet365) -1.5 on the handicap market as he is the much better player and should win this game with something to spare.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Mensur Suljovic +1.5 v Mark Webster, 11/13 (BWIN)
SILVER: Kevin Painter -1.5 v Tomas Seyler, 4/6 (bet365)
BRONZE: James Wade to beat Darren Webster 3-0, 11/10 (YOU WIN)
