It is a good day of horse racing on Saturday with the pick of the races perhaps being the July Cup at Newmarket. Here is out guide to the best of the bets from this race and the others on Saturday (July 13th).
Lethal Force and Shea Shea are battling it out at the head of the market.for the July Cup (15:50 Newmarket). The former has looked good since dropping back to 6f this year and was a winner of the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot. The Clive Cox runner is looking to be the first since Owington in 2004 to win both races. The question mark lies in whether the horse can adjust to the undulating Newmarket course.
Shea Shea finished second at Ascot last time out in the King’s Stand Stakes and is clearly a speed machine. In terms of basic sprinting talent this could be the best horse in the field though again the de Kock runner might struggle though with the stiff uphill finish. Society Rock came second to Lethal Force in the Diamond Jubilee last time out and will look to reverse the form here. The six-year-old came third here last year and commands respect.
Also meriting respect is Gale Force Ten who won over 7f at Ascot last time out. The drop back to 6f might put paid to winning hopes though. Sole Power has the opposite problem to Gale Force Ten in that the horse is an out and out speedster who might find the trip a step too far with all wins coming over 5f.
The bet to me is Hamza each-way as the Kevin Ryan runner is a course and distance winner. True the recent wins have been in a slightly lower class than this though the horse has some impressive speed figures. At double figures this horse looks one to side with each-way.
The Bunbury Cup also takes place at Newmarket Saturday and comes just before the July Cup. The race is a heritage handicap for thoroughbreds aged three-years-old and over and has twenty runners expected to go to post. I like the look of I’m So Glad who loves this course. The Mick Channon winner has two wins and a third from last three races and will likely go off at a very nice price.
York has a good meeting with the pick of the races being the John Smith’s Cup with Stencive expected to go off as favourite. The William Haggas runner was last seen when coming second in the Duke of Edinburgh handicap at the Royal meeting in June. The horse has to be respected though the selection is Niceofyoutotellme. The Ralph Beckett trained runner was a winner over the distance at Newmarket last time out and look to have scope for improvement. The conditions Saturday should suit this horse looks the one to be with at the best morning price.
Ascot also has a meeting on Saturday with the pick of the races being the Summer Mile Stakes. The one mile contest has attracted 13 entries with Aljamaaheer expected to go off as favourite. The Roger Varian runner is a consistent sort who came second to Declaration of War at Ascot last time out. The horse looks deserved favourite but one that is hard to side with at currents odds of 9/4 and with other bets on Saturday this is a race I will miss.
