After the exit of favourites France (to Denmark) in the last eight Sweden are the new favourites for the Women’s European Championships. The hosts are 13/8 (bet365/STAN JAMES) as they seek victory in this event for the first time since 1984. Germany who are seeking their sixth successive victory in this tournament are 15/8 (BETVICTOR). Those who follow our advice and backed Norway at 18/1 each-way will be delighted as they are now down to 4/1 (SKYBET/paddy Power/ladbrokes) and instead of France now face Denmark in the last four. The Danes are the outsiders of the four at 7/1 (GENERAL).
It promises to be a real cracker in the first semi-final of the Women’s European Championships as Germany take on Sweden on Wednesday night. Sweden qualified for the last four after an impressive 4-0 victory over Iceland in the last eight that made it three straight victories for the hosts with an impressive 12 goals. They are the marginal favourites to win this game at 7/5 (paddy Power/william hill).
Germany are 39/20 (betway) for victory and their route to the final has been a little less impressive. They suffered their first defeat in the tournament for 20 years in the group stages going down to Norway before beating Italy 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
The last time these sides met in an competitive game was in the 2008 Olympic quarter-finals and the game ended in a 90 minute draw and it is 5/2 (bet365) a draw here. In two of the last three competitive games Germany have gone through in extra time and they are evens (paddy Power) to qualify for the final while Sweden are 5/6 (william hill).
In terms of goalscorers Sweden will rely on Lotta Schelin, who was our tip for topscorer in this tournament, as has grabbed five goals so far. Germany will have to try keep the Lyon striker quiet if they hope to progress. Germany will hope Celia Okoyino da Mbabi is fit to lead their attack as she is a key player. The forward grabbed 17 in qualifying but has been off-target in this tournament so far netting just twice and hitting ten shots off target.
The recommended bet then is to take the evens (paddy power) on Germany to qualify. Although Sweden are the form side the Germans are masters of the big games having lost just two of their last 12 semi-finals in major tournaments.
The second semi-final is on Thursday night and is between Norway and Denmark. The Danes will be encouraged by the fact they are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Norway and the fact they saw off highly-fancied France in the last round and they can be backed at 12/5 (BWIN) while the draw is a 12/5 (william hill) chance.
I like the look of Norway as they have been impressive this far in the tournament handing Germany their first defeat in 20 years at this event in topping the group before coming through comfortably against Spain. I think the 13/10 (betway) on them to win in 90 minutes is the way to go. The other recommended bet is in the goalscorer markets (when they are priced up) as some value could be found on Solveig Gulbransden to get among the goals. The midfielder is given a licence to attack in this formation and has grabbed two in the last three.
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Norway to beat Denmark in 90 minutes, 13/10 (BETWAY)
SILVER: Germany to qualify for the final, evens (paddy power)
BRONZE: Solveig Gulbrandsen to score anytime v Denmark, best available price
