Germany the value in the Women’s European Championships

Sometimes too much can be read into a defeat. Take Germany they suffered their first defeat in the Women’s European Championships in 59 games and their first for 20 years. Bookmakers have over-reacted and pushed out Germany out to 9/4 (SKYBET/ladbrokes). France are the new favourites at 13/8 (BEVICTOR/paddy Power/CORAL) after an impressive group campaign in which they won all three games scoring seven and conceding just once. As impressive as France have been I can not believe they deserve to be favourites for a tournament that Germany have won the last five times.

Sweden are third in the betting and the hosts are the third favourites at 3/1 (SKYBET/boylesports/betway). The hosts are starting to click into gear netting eight times in their last two goals with Lotta Schelin (our pre-tournament tip) and compatriot Nilla Fischer both joint topscorers with three goals.

Norway saw off Germany in the group stages and they have a winnable last eight game with Spain and then face either France or Denmark in the semi-finals. SKYBET are offering a 1/3 the odds a place in the final and at 18/1 Norway look worth a little bet.

Other teams in the last eight are Spain who are 28/1 (betway), Italy are 50/1 (SKYBET/william hill/betway), Denmark are 66/1 (GENERAL) and Iceland the 125/1 (william hill) outsiders.

Sweden are as short as 1/5 (GENERAL) for victory in their quarter-final against Iceland a side they have won six of the last seven meetings with. Those who think the game wil end drawn can get 13/2 (SKYBET/BETWAY) while an Iceland victory is 14/1 (BETVICTOR/BETWAY). Goals have been a feature of the game for Sweden having scored nine times in their three group matches and I like the look of the 11/8 (SKYBET) that Sweden win this game by three or more goals.

The second semi-final Sunday is between Italy and Germany with the head-to-head record favouring Germany who have won three of the five meetings and are 10/21 (BWIN) for victory here. Those who think the game will end up drawn at 7/2 (GENERAL) and the Italian victory is 7/1 (TOTESPORT/paddy Power). I expect Germany to come through though I can not find a betting angle to this game.

The third quarter-final is the game between Norway and Spain and I really like the look of the Norwegians at 7/5 (paddy Power) to win this game. Norway hold the head-to-head record 2-0 and saw off Germany in their last game. Spain got here by beating England and drawing with Russia two of the weaker teams in the tournament.

The fourth quarter-final comes in the game between France and Denmark with France the 6/11 (BWIN) favourites. France are three wins from three games and sit seven places ahead of their opponents in the FIFA World Rankings. Denmark though will take heart from the fact they won 4-0 last time these sides met and they can be backed at 6/1 (GENERAL) while the draw has been the result in two of the last three and is 7/2 (william hill).

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Germany to win the European Championships, 9/4 (SKYBET/ladbrokes)
SILVER: Norway to beat Spain, 7/5 (paddy Power)
BRONZE: Norway EW in the European Championships, 18/1 (SKYBET)
