Phil Taylor was our outright tip at the start of the PDC World Matchplay Championship and he began with an impressive 10-1 first round demolition of Stuart Kellett producing a three dart average of 103.18. Taylor is among the players in action Tuesday night when the second round gets underway. Up next for the Power is Terry Jenkins who fought back from 2-0 down in his opener against Andy Smith to book his place in the last 16.
Bookmakers make the Power the 1/12 (boylesports/STAN JAMES/william hill) favourite for the game and the head-to-head record supports this with Taylor dominant at 34 wins to just three losses. Jenkins though did win the last meeting between the two which came in the 2012 Championship League group stages and maybe the Bull can take heart from this. If you think so Jenkins is 49/5 (188 BET) for victory on Tuesday night. Seven of the last 12 meetings between the duo have seen Jenkins win no more than two legs and this could be another one sided encounter for Taylor so take him to cover the handicap margin of 6.5 legs at 11/10 (bet365/betway).
Both Simon Whitlock and Kevin Painter came through tough looking openers to book their place in the last 16. Whitlock beat Klaasen 10-8 while averaging 95.79 and Painter came through 10-7 against Jamie Lewis averaging 91.90.
Bookmakers make the Australian the 4/9 (BETVICTOR) favourite for the game as he has won five of the last six meetings between the pair. Painter though has won 6 of the 12 meetings between the duo and is 9/4 (boylesports/ladbrokes/william hill).
I think the Wizard will come through here as he looked far sharper in round one and I take him to do so covering the handicap mark of 2.5 legs at 4/5 (bet365/betway).
Raymond Van Barneveld and Justin Pipe will meet in the second round on Tuesday night and it is Barney who is the understandable favourite at 2/7 (GENERAL). The Dutchman came through his opener with no problems seeing off Mensur Suljovic 10-4 averaging 99.84.
Pipe though produced an excellent three dart average of 99.24 against Mark Webster and might be a back to lay bet at 3/1 (SKYBET/ladbrokes). Barney started slowly against Suljovic and he could do so again here allowing the price of Pipe to come down.
An alternative way of betting against Barney in the earlier stages is to take the 7/5 (bet365) are offering on this game to be level after four legs.
James Wade takes on Gary Anderson in an interestling looking game. Wade booked his place in the second round with a 10-8 victory over John Part with a three dart average of 97.33. Anderson meanwhile played some of his best darts averaging 97.36 in defeating King 10-5.
These two plays have met 22 times previously and it is Anderson who leads the head-to-head record 15-7. It was Wade though who emerged victorious when they last met in the Premier League in April and he is 4/7 (BOYLESPORTS) for victory. Anderson meanwhile has won seven of the last nine between the two and is 13/8 (bet365/BETVICTOR). This could be a close battle so I recommend taking over 21.5 legs at 4/5 (SKYBET).
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Taylor -6.5 on handicap v T Jenkins, 11/10 (BET365/BETWAY)
SILVER: Whitlock -2.5 on handicap v Painter, 4/5 (BET365/BETWAY)
BRONZE: Over 21.5 legs in Wade v Anderson, 4/5 (SKYBET)
