After the excitement of the Open Championship last weekend (that saw our headline selection Phil Mickelson emerge victorious) it is back to the Tours and here is our guide to the best of the bets from the PGA Tour.
The Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario is the venue for the PGA Tour this weekend as it plays hosts to the 140th Canadian Open. It is the 26th time the course has hosted the event and it is the first time since a double header in 2008/09.
The betting is headed by Brandt Snedeker at 12/1 (GENERAL) who finished tied 11th in the Open Championship despite a poor 79 in the second round. What is noticeable is that he lead the field at Murifield in par five scoring which is vital here as it is a par 71 with five par fives. Snedeker came tied fifth at the course in 2009 so course form is not a question. He has to be respected though the price may be a little short for some.
Matt Kuchar and Hunter Mahan are next in the betting at 20/1 (GENERAL). Kuchar is in good form having finished tied for 15th at Murifield and has made twenty consecutive cuts on the Tour. The problem is that he has missed the cut on his only previous visit to Glen Abbey. Mahan though loves Glen Abbey having tied for fourth here in 2004 and coming fifth in 2008. He also has the game to suit the venue as he ranks eighth in driving which should help on a course with a number of par fives. The problem with Mahan is that once again he let a promising final day position slip in a major and the last time he did this (in the US Open) he failed to make the top twenty in the subsequent event (Travelers Championship).
Others expected to be in the mix are Dustin Johnson at 22/1 (GENERAL), Graeme McDowell at 25/1 (GENERAL), Luke Donald at 25/1 (GENERAL) and Bubba Watson at 28/1 (GENERAL).
Since 2000 only two players have teed up in the Open and won this event the following weekend Sean O’Hair (11) and Jim Furyk (07). It is unclear why this may be so, maybe it is because of the travel, the differing style of game from the links course or maybe just because the Open is a punishing event both mentally and physically.
It could pay then to skip people short in the betting and look at some bigger priced value. A look at some recent winner Scott Piercy (12), Nathan Green (09) and Chez Reavie (08) supports this theory.
The first name to look at then is a man who did play in the Open but missed the cut allowing an extra few days rest before heading out to Canada. The player in question is Billy Horschel who has a win and four top tens to his name from his last 11 events. The American is second on the Tour in birdie average which will serve him well at this course and he can be backed at 35/1 with sportingbet who are among the firms paying six places each-way. The second player is an even bigger price and is Nicholas Thompson who was competing in the Sanderson Farms Championship at Annandale Golf club last weekend, Thompson was the 54-hole-leader before finishing fourth. The week before he tied 12th at the John Deere Classic so is in form. The player finished tied fifth here in 2008 and looks good each-way value at 80/1 (GENERAL) and even better to finish in the top ten at 7/1 (SKYBET).
BEST OF THE BETS
GOLD: Billy Horschel, EW, 35/1 (sportingbet)
SILVER: Nicholas Thompson to finish in the top ten, 7/1 (SKYBET)
BRONZE: Nicholas Thompson, EW, 80/1 (GENERAL)
