The opening game of the night Wednesday in the World Darts Matchplay Championship second round features Andy Hamilton up against Ian White. Bookmakers make Hamilton the 2/5 (888 SPORT/unibet) favourite and White 12/5 (SKYBET/SPREADEX). White shocked Robert Thornton 10-3 in the first round producing a three dart average of 93.38. Hamilton eased through against Ronnie Baxter 10-1 with a three dart average of 97.12.

These two players have met twice before and have won one game each. Hamilton won a UK Open qualifier between the two in 2013 while White was victorious in a Tour match in 2012.

The recommended bet in this game is Ian White on the handicap where he is given 3.5 legs at 4/5 (boylesports/BETVICTOR/CORAL).

The second game of the evening is between Adrian Lewis and Brendan Dolan with Lewis the 1/4 (boylesports) favourite for the match and Dolan 4/1 (SKYBET/SPREADEX).

Lewis saw off Ronnie Huybrechts 10-5 in the first round with both players somewhat below their best. Jackpot produced a three dart average of 86.94 and he will need to raise this if he is to progress. Dolan had a three dart average of 89.38 in his victory over Steve Beaton. The head-to-head record between the two suggest a close encounter with Lewis leading it 4-3 though he has won each of the last four. None of the seven games between the two have been won by a bigger margin than three legs so it makes sense to side with Dolan at 11/10 (BOYLESPORTS/BETVICTOR/STAN JAMES) on the handicap with a 4.5 leg start.

The best game of the night looks like being the one between Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright. The Dutchman is the 1/6 (GENERAL) favourite while Wright can be backed at 47/10 (188 BET).

Van Gerwen booked his place in the last 16 with a 10-7 victory over Colin Lloyd with a three dart average of 99.83. Wright meanwhile looked good in seeing off Belgian Kim Huybrechts in his opener with a three dart average of 96.06.

The head-to-head favours van Gerwen who has won 12 of their 15 meetings including each of the last ten battles. Wright though is playing some of the best stuff of his career and has ran him close in their last three meetings. I think Wright should be backed with the handicap where he is given a start of 4.5 legs at evens (BOYLESPORTS/STAN JAMES).

The concluding battle Wednesday is the game between Dave Chisnall and Jamie Caven. Bookmakers make Caven the 10/11 (ladbrokes) favourite while Chisnall is an 11/10 (bet365/sportingbet/CORAL) chance.

Both players were made to work for the place in the second round with Chisnall overcoming Paul Nicholson 10-8 and Caven seeing off Newton 10-8. The head-to-head record favours Caven who has won six of their eight previous meetings including a 6-0 demolition in the European Championships. This one-sided encounter tended to be an exception to the rule though as three of the eight meetings have been settled by just one leg, one by just two legs and three by just three legs. I think the bet then is to take the over legs on this match as over 22.5 legs can be backed at 11/10 (paddy Power).

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Wright +4.5 on handicap v van Gerwen, evens (BOYLESPORTS/STAN JAMES)
SILVER: Dolan +4.5 on handicap v Lewis, 11/10 (BOYLESPORTS/BETVITOR/STAN JAMES)
BRONZE: White +3.5 v Hamilton, 4/5 (BOYLESPORTS/BET VICTOR/CORAL)
