Premier League preview and odds: Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool

August 27, 2016 12:30pm - White Hart Lane

Premier League

Tottenham Hotspur will look to maintain their unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign on Saturday when they welcome a Liverpool side who will be playing their third away game in a row to White Hart Lane.

Steady start for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur were one of last season`s most consistent teams until an end of season blip saw them crash out of the title race. They have already made a steady but unremarkable start to the new campaign, picking up four points from their opening two games.

Last weekend, they edged to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on home soil (just as we predicted in our match preview) thanks to a late goal from new signing Victor Wanyama. Prior to that win, Mauricio Pochettino`s men kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Everton.

Opponents Liverpool have had a slightly more erratic start to their campaign, having followed up their explosive 4-3 away win at Arsenal with a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Burnley. The Reds totally dominated the match at Turf Moor and recorded in excess of 80% possession. However, they were unable to capitalise on their dominance against a team that sat back and defended for most of the game.

Learning how to break down teams that are happy to concede possession will be high on the ‘to do list’ for Jurgen Klopp and his men this season. Giving away too many cheap points in such fashion could scupper their chances of breaking back into the top four.

There may also be concerns about the defensive frailty that has already cost them five goals in their first two games. Having said that, the season is still in the early stages and the Anfield team has shown glimpses that they could be a force to be reckoned if things start to click into place.

Team news

Spurs` Captain and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is out injured and will play no part this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Reds will go into battle without the services of Sheyi Ojo, Loris Karius, Joe Gomez and Mamadou Sakho. Emre Can and Divock Origi were both withdrawn early from the midweek League cup game against Burton Albion but are expected to recover from minor niggles in time.

Betting odds and tips

Spurs have not won any of the last seven meetings between the two sides and have failed to score a goal in any of their last three home meetings against the Merseyside club.

If Liverpool can put in a 20 minute spell like they did against Arsenal on the opening weekend, they could come away from London with all three points.
