As Arsenal do not take to the field until Sunday when they meet Everton at home, Louis van Gaal`s Manchester United could take third position with a win against Sunderland at home tomorrow afternoon. There is currently only one point between the Gunners and the Reds and whilst United`s hypothetical upwards progression could be short lived, it would put the pressure on Arsene Wenger`s men to get a result against the Toffees.
Should United slip up against the Black Cats, they leave the door open for Southampton to usurp them in the final Champions League position and could lose traction on the top four. Gus Poyet`s away side are currently three points above the relegation zone in 16th but will look increasingly vulnerable should they fail to take all three points at Old Trafford. A win for either of Aston Villa or Burnley would bring the Tyneside club closer to the dog-fight should they fail to beat United and could see the boss` position in danger.
Conversely, a victory for the Mack`em could see them climb to as high as 13th should other results also go their way.
The two sides have only met once this season, back at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League in January, a first half goal for either club being enough to earn both sides an early point. Juan Mata got United off to the perfect start with a goal in the 17th minute before Jack Rodwell pegged van Gaal`s men back around the half hour mark. Sunderland held on for the draw under much pressure. Should you fancy 1-1 to be the score in this reverse fixture, you can pick up a price of 19/2 at Betvictor.
Indeed, their superior league position means that it is Manchester United who are the favourites to claim all three points, sending Sunderland back to the North East empty-handed. The North West side can be picked up at 2/5 with ladbrokes. An unlikely away victory is available at 19/2 at both Betvictor and boylesports with a second draw in the two sides` second successive clash on offer at 9/2 at betfred and Totesport.
The home side will be looking to bounce back after Swansea caused an end to their streak of seven straight games without a defeat. That was away from home and the Red Devils` recent home form is still excellent, having accumulated 12 points from the maximum of fifteen on offer.
United scored 12 goals in these five games, Robin van Persie the club`s top scorer in these games contributing four of these goals. The former closed the scoring in home wins over Liverpool (3-0), Newcastle (3-1) and Burnley (3-1) and can be backed at 4/1 (paddy Power) to be the last goalscorer once again. His other goal was the opener in the 3-1 victory over Leicester, 4/1 with the same bookmaker also saying that the Dutchman will break the deadlock tomorrow.
Three of United`s last five home matches ended as 3-1 victories, should you think that score will also be the result against Sunderland, it is available at 13/1 with unibet.
This is somewhat unlikely as the Black Cats have failed to score in any of their last three matches in all competitions. A win to nil for van Gaal`s men is on offer at 11/10 at Skybet. With five points from five games, Sunderland`s recent Premier League away record isn`t great either. Indeed, Poyet`s side have only once scored more than two goals in a Premier League match on the road all season and are 1/66 with bet365 to score under 2.5 goals against United. boylesports` 1/7 says they will score under 1.5.
