There`s a Lancashire derby in League One on Sunday as Fleetwood Town host Preston North End. The hosts will be looking to make their mark upon the play-offs with a victory though could end up sliding further away from their end goal should they taste defeat at the weekend. Fleetwood have tallied 52 points this season, four off Peterborough who occupy the final play-off position. This gap could be reduced to one with a win for the Cod Army and a defeat for the Posh against the struggling Coventry. Losing at home to Preston could see Graham Alexander`s men fall to as low as 13th.
Sunday`s visitors are going well in the league, sitting in second position with a three point cushion. Whilst they could make a dent on Bristol City`s lead should Fleetwood be dispatched and City fail to win against Barnsley, North End will not fall out of the top two should they lose in Lancashire. Third placed Swindon will not be playing this weekend and, even if they were, they would need a five goal swing in goal difference should they move into the final automatic promotion place.
Simon Grayson`s Preston managed to overcome a two goal deficit to beat Fleetwood in the pair`s only encounter this season. This was in the reverse League One fixture at Deepdale. The away side went one goal to the good thanks to Stephen Jordan`s goal in the first minute. Things got a whole lot worse for the Lilywhites as Scott Laird turned the ball into the back of his own net just six minutes later to see the home side go 2-0 down.
Preston`s first goal came 15 minutes after the restart, Joe Garner finding the back of the net to half the deficit. The striker was on the scoresheet again just three minutes later to see his side go level before completing his hat-trick 10 minutes from time in the 3-2 victory.
Betvictor`s 35/1 says that Preston will be able to win by three goals to two once again away from home whilst it`s 17/16 (888sport, unibet) should you think that both teams will score. Both ladbrokes and william hill have North End at 4/1 to come from behind to either draw or win. Another Garner hat-trick can be picked up at the best price of 40/1 (boylesports, william hill). Betvictor`s 29/20 says that he will be able to score at any time.
Indeed, Grayson`s men are the odds-on favourites to be able to do the double over their Lancashire rivals. The visitors can be backed at the best price of 5/6, that`s available at Coral. Otherwise, Fleetwood are on offer at 17/4 at bet365 and a draw can be picked up at 14/5 at a trio of bookmakers (bet365, Betvictor, boylesports).
Alexander`s men have a mixed record at home, having racked up two wins, two draws and two losses in their last five. They have only kept one clean sheet at home in these five games and have scored six times, conceding the same number. Coral`s 17/5 says that the Cod Army will be able to bag over 1.5 goals whilst evens with both Coral and Spreadex says that Preston will grab over 1.5.
The Lilywhites are unbeaten in ten League One matches and have secured 10 points from their last five games on the road. These five away ties consisted of three wins to nil and paddy Power have 9/5 on the match ending similarly on Sunday. Garner scored five of Preston`s 12 goals in this context, grabbing a brace in the side`s 2-0 win over Chesterfield. boylesports have him at 15/2 to score two or more goals against Fleetwood.
