Saints to put the brakes on Liverpool start

Liverpool will be a popular addition to many accumulators at 8/13 (BETVICTOR/william hill) to see off Southampton. A few words of caution though as the Merseysiders will be without the influential Phillipe Coutinho who will be out until the end of October. The Brazilian is a key player in keeping the attacks moving and his presence will be missed.

In addition Southampton have limited their opponents to a combined nine shots on target this season from four games which is the lowest in the Premier League. In recent away visits they have drawn at Stamford Bridge and suffered narrow one goal defeats at Old Trafford, White Hart Lane and at Anfield last season.

I think the way to play this game is in the Asian Handicap market where Southampton receive a 0.75 start at 5/4 (paddy Power) which will pay out full if the visitors win or draw and as a half loss if they lose by one goal. The Saints have lost just one of their last 16 away games by more than one goal while Liverpool have won none of their last seven Premier League home goals by more than one goal.

Alan Pardew has taken a lot of criticism in recent months so he probably deserves a little praise for the way he has handled the Joe Kinnear situation and he has lead the Magpies to two straight victories in the Premier League. The North Easterners will be confident of three points though at 5/6 (GENERAL) I will not be rushing to back them to do so against Hull. Steve Bruce as a former Sunderland manager will be up for this game and his side have proved difficult to bring down in recent weeks conceding just two to Chelsea and Man City, one against Cardiff and keeping Norwich at bay with ten men.

The bet in this game is in the anytime scorer market where Sone Aluko appeals at 5/1 (BETVICTOR/888 SPORT/unibet). The Nigerian has yet to find the net but is averaging around two shots on target per game and he is getting the chances from behind the striker.

West Brom play host to Sunderland in a battle between the two winless sides in the Premier League. The Baggies are the 11/10 (CORAL) favourites which looks very short on a side who have won none of their last eight in the Premier League. The Black Cats though have won just two of their last 19 games so while 29/10 (BETVICTOR/888 SPORT/unibet) on an away win and 5/2 (GENERAL) the draw is marginal value but not enough to get involved with. I talked last week about how weak Sunderland are in the air at the back and the Baggies have the players to worry them. Gareth McAuley is a huge threat but he is no bigger than 9/1 (paddy Power) so instead take colleague Jonas Olsson who is 16/1 (william hill).

West Ham and Everton do battle in London on Saturday with the Merseysiders 7/5 (GENERAL) favourites following victory over Chelsea last weekend. The price looks very short on a side without an away win in their last ten Premier League away games against a Hammers side that have lost just two of their last 11 here. I can not be siding with West Ham though as they are struggling for goals without Andy Carroll. The bet is the 21/20 (betway) on the NO in the both teams to score market. West Ham have failed to score in their last 284 minutes of Premier League football while Everton have netted just once in their last three games.

BEST OF THE BETS

GOLD: Southampton +0.75 on Asian Handicap v Liverpool, 5/4 (paddy power)
SILVER: Sone Aluko anytime scorer, 5/1 (BETVICTOR/888 SPORT/unibet)
BRONZE: Jonas Olsson anytime scorer v Sunderland, 16/1 (william hill)
