Norwich manager Chris Hughton made an interesting point in a recent press conference about how the qualification of England could have a knock on affect on the Premier League the next few weekends. The chance to appear in Brazil 2014 will see many raise their game. One such player is Adam Lallana who will hope to follow his team-mate Rickie Lambert into the England squad. The best place to make an annoucement will be on the Old Trafford pitch in what is the most newsworthy of the 3pm kick-offs on Saturday. The Saints man netted last time out against Swansea and is 23/4 (888 SPORT/unibet) to get among the goals at anytime against a United side that have kept a clean sheet in just one of their last five at home.
If Southampton were to record a victory it would mark the first time since 8 May, 2002 that United have lost back-to-back home league games. It is 6/1 (TOTESPORT/betfred) for Southampton to come out on top here while the draw is available at 10/3 (bet365/sportingbet/BETVICTOR). The Saints though have taken just one point previously from 14 Premier League visits to Old Trafford and it is 4/7 (GENERAL) that United get back on track with three points.
Stoke take on West Brom at the Britannia Stadium in a game that will be an early candidate for the last slot on Match of the Day. The Potters are the 11/8 (william hill) favourites for the game which looks a terrible bet on a side who were badly out of form going into the international break losing each of their last three league games. Stoke though can heart from the recent head-to-head meetings between these sides in which they have lost just one of their last 13.
I like the look of West Brom to get something from this game as they are as balanced and organized as Stoke but have much more firepower going forward. The Baggies took four points from two games with Man United and Arsenal and are now unbeaten in their last four Premier League games. The draw is always a risk so look at the 6/4 (BETVICTOR) on West Brom in the draw no bet market. Sticking with English players I like the look of Saido Berahino at 17/4 (BWIN) in the anytime scorer market as the youngster has made an incredible start to the season. He has netted six in his last nine in all competitions and grabed two for England under 21s in midweek.
Gus Poyet will start life as Sunderland manager this weekend knowing he has to hit the ground running as with all due repect to Swansea, Newcastle and Hull, the next three fixtures represent the best chance to get some points before a run of five games that includes Man City, Chelsea and Tottenham. It is 23/4 (888 SPORT/unibet) that the Black Cat hit the ground running and they will be boosted by the news that Steven Fletcher is back.
The Swans can count themselves unlucky to have not got anything from their game with Southampton as they had a lot of the play. That being said it has not been the best start for the Welsh side as boss Michael Laudrup tries to find a way to rotate his squad for the Europa League and Premier League double challenge. It is 8/13 (GENERAL) a Swansea home victory though they have not won any of the last eight at home so it looks a little short.
If you throw in the fact that is the first game under Gus Poyet and it is unclear how Sunderland will shape up then it is a game I am happy to miss from a betting perspective.
