The Irish open heads to the North for the first time since 1953 and home hope Rory McIlroy heads the market, can he send the fans at home happy?
Bookmakers make McIlroy 7/1 (general) to claim the crown, closely followed in the market by fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell who is 10/1 (general). McIlroy knows the course very well and will certainly be a popular bet. If the weather stays fine then McIlroy should coast home, unfortunatly for Rory strong winds are forecast. Fine player though he is question marks still exist about his form on windy courses and with accuracy off the tee proving to be a problem this season, value could be had elsewhere.
Second favourite McDowell arrives at the tournament in great form with a tie for second in the US Open a fortnight ago and should be at home in the windy conditions that have been forecast. McDowell is very much a confidence player and the confidence seems to be flowing at the moment at 10/1 he will have his supporters.
Southern Irishman Padraig Harrington won this event in 2007 and is 12/1 (Skybet/Totesport/betfred) third favourite to claim the title, while Englishman Ross Fisher is 18/1 (general), Nicolas Colsaerts 25/1 (general) and Paul Lawrie 25/1 (general). Defending champion Simon Dyson is a 33/1 shot (general) and despite the change in venue should be at home amongst the wind and the links. Branden Grace of South Africa has had a great year on tour and looks a generous 36/1 (32red).
Those looking for the value could be interested in Northern Irishman Darren Clarke who is 66/1 (sportingbet/Betvictor/william hill) and made find his best form in his homeland backed by a vocal crowd.
Stateside the weather should be a little finer and this should suit Tiger Woods in the AT&T national at Washington DC. The event returns to the Congressional Country Club where Tiger Woods shot a tournament record score in 2009. Woods is 11/2 (general) favourite to land the title here. If it is the Tiger Woods of the first two days of the US Open he should win this comfortably, if it is the Tiger of the final two days of the US Open then this tournament is wide open.
Next in the market is Hunter Mahan who is 14/1 (Stan James) who has two tour wins and three top ten finishers on the this year. The ultra consistent Dustin Johnson is priced at 16/1 (general) while Jim Furyk will attract some each-way support at 18/1(general). Furyk finished fourth at the US Open showing some signs of form and could be on the verge of a tournament victory.
Those looking for some each-way value could do worse than look at previous winners on this course with the event also have taken place here in 2007 & 2008. 2008 champion Anthony Kim is not here this year, but 2007 champion K.J Choi is. Choi has gone on record stating that the course suits his style of play and could offer some value 40/1 (general) for victory this year.
Jason Day could also offer some value at 40/1(Skybet/Bwin) as the Australian finished second here when the US Open took place here in 2011, while Robert Garrigus who finished tied third in that event is 55/1 (general). Also tied third that year were Y E Yang who is 100/1 (bet365/SkyBet/Bwin) and Kevin Chappell 110/1 (bet365).
It promises to be another great week of action on the tour so make sure you get your bets on.
