Pre-season friendly preview and odds: Real Madrid vs Chelsea

July 30, 2016 21:05am - Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan

Pre-season friendly

After falling 3-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in their first friendly of the summer, Real Madrid will be looking to get a first win under their belt when they face a Chelsea side who have won their last three pre-season games on the bounce.

Chelsea full of confidence after win over Liverpool

Chelsea will face Spanish giants Real Madrid with a spring in their step after three-straight pre-season victories including a mid-week win over Premier League rivals Liverpool.

That victory was the first of three games that the Blues will play in this year`s edition of the International Champions Cup including this weekend`s clash and a game against Inter next week. Prior to the Liverpool win, Antonio Conte`s men had barely been tested in two games against RZ Pellets and Atus Ferlach (behind closed doors). However, the Londoners had to be at their best defensively to nullify the attacking threat of Jurgen Klopp`s men.

Champions League holders Real Madrid looked poor in their opener against PSG and were perhaps fortunate to only lose 3-1. However, they did give some minutes to several reserve players in the second half and as a result, the final score should be taken with a pinch of salt. If anything, the French side took a much more serious approach to the game, with new boss Unai Emery justifiably keen to make an instant impact in his new role.

Such was the experimental nature of the Zidane`s approach that his son Enzo was finally able to make his debut for Los Blancos.

Team news

Both of Zidane`s sons are with the squad in the USA and could feature at some point in this game, while Sergio Ramos could also be involved after joining up with the squad. However, star men Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale are still absent following their Euro 2016 exploits.

New signing N`Golo Kante is the only significant absentee from the Chelsea squad so a strong line up can be expected from Conte.

Chelsea should be physically one step ahead of their rivals and also have a near to full-strength squad available. Meanwhile, Zidane will be aware that Real Madrid fans are not very accepting of defeats, even in a friendly situation, so we may see a more competitive display from Los Blancos on Saturday.

Betting odds and tips

Chelsea were ultra-defensive against Liverpool and will need to put in a similar display if they are to keep out the attack-minded Spaniards. Real Madrid can be expected to take a less experimental approach to this game and will be going all out for the win.
